University to host guest speakers at law school interest forum

By Maura Fenske for The Yellow Jacket 3 min read

As Waynesburg University students plan and prepare for life after graduation, their exploration of the options available to them upon completion of their undergraduate studies is vital.

The Stover Center is helping students with that exploration through an upcoming panel for those interested in attending law school.

The Stover Center is set to host two notable attorneys at the forum titled “Thinking About Law School?” which will be held Thursday, Oct. 22, at 3 p.m. in Stover Campus Center Rooms 302 and 303.Students will hear from these accomplished lawyers and discover what law school en-tails, what choices should be made before and during law school and what practicing law is like today.

Dr. Larry Stratton, director of the Stover Center, believes that this visit from two leaders in the realm of the law will greatly benefit his Stover Scholars, many of whom are already interested in attending law school.

“It’s a service to the university,” said Stratton. “The law is ubiquitous. It’s one thing to hear from advisors about law school, and it’s another thing to hear two prominent attorneys discuss it.”

Not only should Stover Scholars attend, but Stratton also strongly encourages students of all majors and areas of interest to take part in the forum.

“Students from across the curriculum should be intrigued,” said Stratton. “The criminal justice majors should learn more about the law, by definition, as they’re enforcing it. Business students should benefit from what they have to say about the regulation of business.”

Judge Gary Glazer, a Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas judge, and Professor David Skeel, author and professor of law, will be the panelists at the forum.

Glazer was appointed in 2011 to fight corruption in the Philadelphia traffic courts. He currently teaches Trial Practice at Villanova University Law School in Villanova, Pennsylvania.

Skeel teaches Corporate Law at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He is the author of several books, the newest being “True Paradox: How Christianity Makes Sense of Our Com-plex World.”

He has also written several articles that have been featured in publications such as The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.

The Stover Scholars and other students in attendance will have the chance to draw on the exper-tise of these panelists by asking them questions and networking with them.

Ashley Beener, a Stover Scholar and double major in history and political science, is interested in studying law after receiving her undergraduate degree. From this forum, she hopes to gain a better understanding of what to expect as she enters law school.

“As I am currently applying for early decisions for law school, I hope to gain insight into what I will be looking forward to for the next three years of my life,” said Beener. “I have previously met, through the Stover Scholar Program, Judge Gary Glazer, and he has explained in depth what it is like to be a judge with the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. Professor Skeel will add an interesting dimension to the event as he is a law professor.”

Beener believes that any student interested in studying law should attend the forum, regardless of whether or not the student is a Stover Scholar.

“Never rule out any future possibility,” said Beener. “Law school teaches a different way of thinking. Also, with a law degree, you can go into any field. I would recommend this lecture to anyone who thinks law might be a possibility in his or her future.”
