REPUBLIC — The Brownsville Falcons celebrated Homecoming in a big way Friday night, rolling past Charleroi, 61-15, for their second win of the season.

The Falcons rode the legs of running back Tryvon Brown, who rushed for 268 yards on 18 carries. Brown scored three touchdowns, with scoring runs of 55, 11 and 75 yards.

“We’ve been knocking on the door recently and it’s nice to finally break through with a win,” Brownsville’s Jason House said. “I’m extremely pleased for the kids because the results were not what we wanted this year, but they keep coming back and working hard. We’re making progress.”

The Falcons (2-5, 2-6) scored on their first possession, taking the opening kickoff from their 38 and driving to the Cougars’ 33 where Marcellous Grooms found Mason Kelly slipping past the Charleroi secondary for the touchdown. Brown’s two-point run on the conversion gave the Falcons an 8-0 lead in the first quarter.

Brown broke loose for a 55-yard sprint in the second quarter and John Pascoe followed that with a 37-yard scoring run to increase the Falcons’ lead to 22-0.

The Cougars (0-8,0-8) showed a lot of grit by playing hard until the final whistle. Running back Brock Shannon gave Charleroi a boost with an 18-yard scoring run in the second quarter. Shannon finished the night fighting for 92 yards on 22 carries, as Brownsville took a 22-7 lead to the locker room at the half.

“It’s been a tough year for us because of injuries. Plus, we lost another two-way starter today because of illness.” Charleroi’s Donnie Militzer said. “The kids played hard and we tried everything as you can see. We just want to finish the season out as best we can.”

Brownsville started to put some distance between itself and the Cougars with two scores in the third quarter. The first on a 10-yard run from DaVante Stafford and the second on an 11-yard run from Brown to open up a 37-7 lead.

Charleroi caught the Falcons a little too relaxed on their next possession. Jimmy Smith, who rushed for 95 yards for the Cougars, picked up 65 on a run to the Brownsville 5. After losing a yard on the next play, George Lukach connected with Tra’Mayne Courtley on a 6-yard scoring toss. Lukach then pass to Erric Tedrow for the two-point conversion to cut the Brownsville lead to 37-15.

The Falcons quickly regrouped and got those points back on a 75-yard touchdown run from Brown to open up a 43-15 lead after three quarters.

“Tryvon ran well for us tonight. He ran hard and has great field vision,” House said. “I’m happy the way the offensive line played tonight. I start two seniors, two freshmen and a sophomore. We’ve gone through some growing pains learning new schemes but the light is starting to come on and it’s good to see.”

Brownsville put the mercy rule into effect with three scores in the fourth quarter on 34-yard run from Stafford, a 48-yard punt return from Lenny Michaux and a 29-yard run from Lucas Harn.
