Campus embraces the fall season
Last Saturday, Oct. 24, students at Waynesburg University were given the chance to be entertained with bingo and a movie–but this time, with an exciting Halloween twist. Halloween bingo began at 7 p.m. and was immediately followed by a showing of the film, “Halloweentown.”
“We always do a bingo each month, so this month is Halloween-themed. The theme is really based around the prizes,” said Pat Bristor, associate dean of students. “There will be some Halloween baskets, some movie baskets with scary movies and stuff like that.”
Students gathered in the Beehive for the frequent Waynesburg activity.
“It was a pretty packed crowd compared to the last bingo,” said Joel Kuzminski, freshman accounting major. “There was a lot more energy in the room. All of the prizes were in little jack-o-lantern baskets, and there was a lot of candy prizes.”
After bingo, a movie was featured to carry through with the Halloween theme.
“Because bingo is very popular, we thought right after bingo, we’ll start the movie,” Bristor said. “And there’ll be some treats and stuff that hopefully students will enjoy.”
The Student Activities Board chose to show “Halloweentown.”
“The movie was just to have something tied in,” said Bristor. “The students like “Halloweentown”–I’ve never seen it–so we’re going to show that.”
The Halloween festivities, however, are by no means complete. The Student Activities Board has also planned the Monster Mash dance in Stover for this Friday, Oct 30.
“The Monster Mash is our annual Halloween dance and costume contest, but we’re also going to have a photo booth. We’ll have the frame there so students can take their selfies and whatever with their friends and their costumes,” said Bristor. “And we’re going to have a game where students can win some prizes, and [there will be] food.”
Bristor sees Halloween as an exciting holiday at Waynesburg University and believes student interest makes planning events simpler.
“I think it just makes it easier to plan when you have an event that you know students like — the costume contest is always pretty popular. So overall, I think its just because students enjoy it,” said Bristor.
Bristor explained that students can look forward to similar holiday-themed activities in future months. Thanks to the Student Activities Board, students are given multiple opportunities to enjoy the holidays on campus.
“Overall, the mission of Student Activities is to provide opportunities for students outside the classroom, to help give them a better collegiate experience,” said Bristor, in reference to the organization. “We want them to come out and enjoy their time here and engage and get to know other students. I think by providing these opportunities, we allow students to do that. Not just the Halloween things, but in general, student activities.”
