Pa. Civil War Roundtable welcomes professor

By Steve Samek for The Yellow Jacket 5 min read

David Fisher, Western Pennsylvania Civil War Roundtable president, appreciated her extensive knowledge.

“My knowledge of the founding of Liberia is rudimentary at best, and the Lincoln connection was especially intriguing because it was totally new to me,” said Fisher.

Younger hoped to impress the Roundtable in her first speaking engagement there.

“I was a little concerned they wouldn’t appreciate a non-battlefield topic,” said Younger. “[But] I was well- received and asked lots of questions. It was really great.”

All of her work paid off with many good reviews from the attendees of the Roundtable.

“Let’s just say that judging from the very positive comments I received from nine or 10 attendees, our group, like me, was totally fascinated by this novel topic,” said Fisher.

Younger felt honored to have been able to speak, especially after some of her well-respected colleagues from Penn State University have spoken at prior Roundtables.

After giving a successful talk, Younger has been invited to speak at another Roundtable on the subject of the illegal slave trade and the Civil War.

For Waynesburg students interested in the Civil War who might have missed the talk or would like to know more, the university offers two classes about the Civil War in the university catalog.

One of these classes is a general introduction to the Civil War: History 219.

The other class is a more advanced look into the specifics of the war.

“It is a class that looks at understudied topics of the Civil War not studied in the introductory course,” said Younger.

Younger tries as much has she can to incorporate her personal field research into the teaching of these classes. If her research fits into a topic – like the slave trade, for example – it is incorporated into the class discussions.

“I hope students appreciate information not read about; history is not just text,” said Younger.

Students are also welcome to participate in Western Pennsylvania Civil War Roundtable events. The speaker series takes place at the group’s monthly meeting on the third Wednesday of each month.

In addition to the speakers, the group also takes an annual field trip to historical battlefields.

More information can be found on the Roundtable’s website at www.wpacwrt.org.
