Monroe, Chovanec advance to Section 1-AA finals
California’s John Monroe lost only two games on his way to the finals of the Section 1-AA singles tournament Monday at the Greensburg Racquet Club.
Monroe faces Mount Pleasant’s Jacob Chovanec in the title match today.
Monroe, the No. 1 seed, had an opening round bye and then defeated Ringgold’s Miguel Tunon in the first round, 10-0.
The junior continued through the bracket with a 10-1 win in the quarterfinals against Brownsville’s Jake Robbins. Monroe advanced to the finals with a 6-1, 6-0 win against Thomas Jefferson’s Bryan Ochs.
Chovanec, the No. 3 seed, also had an opening-round bye. He opened with a 10-3 win against South Park’s Logan Mannheimer and advanced to the semifinals with a 10-5 win over Greensburg Salem’s Riley Maruca.
Chovanec defeated California’s Josh Wohar, the No. 2 seed, in the semifinals, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Wohar cruised through his first two matches, defeating Southmoreland’s Conner Riley, 10-0, and West Mifflin’s Darren Studnicki, 10-1.
Robbins won his first match, defeating Greensburg Central Catholic’s Eric Kiliany, 10-3.
Southmoreland’s Hudson Nickelson lost his first match to Ochs, 10-6. The Vikings’ Robbie Bailey won his first match against Greensburg Salem’s Terry Madarish, 10-1, but lost to South Park’s Devin Stolar in the next round.
Ringgold’s Matt Burch lost his first match to Studnicki, 10-3.
Riley advanced to the first round with a 10-1 win against Brownsville’s Phil Thomas.
