Lecture set

The 11th annual Dr. Bernard Cobetto Lecture Series on Contemporary Issues at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg will feature Joanne Katz, professor of criminal justice and legal studies at Missouri Western State University.

Her presentation, entitled “Restorative Justice: Exploring Ethics and Criminal Justice in the Age of Mass Incarceration,” will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Ferguson Theater.

The lecture is free to attend.

Talk slated

State Physician General Dr. Rachel Levine, who has made history as the highest-ranking openly transgender Pennsylvania government official, will share her life experiences at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus, at noon Thursday.

Levine is a professor of pediatrics and psychiatry at the Penn State College of Medicine, where she founded the Penn State Hershey Eating Disorders Program and the Division of Adolescent Medicine.

The talk, which is free of charge and open to the public, will take place in Swimmer Hall, located on the lower level of the Williams Building.

Cancer fundraiser scheduled

Waynesburg University’s Colleges Against Cancer club will host its ninth annual Mini Relay for Life from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. April 17 in Johnson Commons. The public is invited to attend and participate in activities scheduled throughout the day.

Money raised at the American Cancer Society event will benefit Greene County cancer programs. This year’s fundraising goal is $20,000, which can be reached through online fundraising by the various relay teams and money raised during the event.

Talk scheduled

Steve Handy, CEO of Uniontown Hospital, will be the featured speaker for this month’s CEO Conversations at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus, at noon April 20.

Handy became CEO in 2013 after serving as the hospital’s senior vice president responsible for finance, information technology and risk management for more than two decades.

The event, which is free of charge and open to the public, will take place in the university’s student center on the lower level of the Williams Building.

Grant sought

The Lafayette Community Garden at Lafayette School in Uniontown Area School District has entered the Seeds of Change grant program and is asking for community support to help secure a grant by voting online at www.seedsofchangegrant.com. Voting is open through April 18.

The grant will be used to re-enliven the garden for the well-being and education of students at Lafayette School and the local neighborhood. The top 50 voted projects will move on to a final judging phase, with 12 school garden recipients and 12 community garden recipients receiving grants of $10,000 or $20,000.

Graduation set

The Rev. Dr. Richard Edgar Visser will serve as the baccalaureate speaker, and D. Raja will address the class of 2016 as the commencement speaker when Waynesburg University holds its annual graduation exercises May 1.

Baccalaureate services will be held in Roberts Chapel at 11 a.m., and commencement will be held on the front lawn of Miller Hall at 2 p.m. In case of inclement weather, the Commencement ceremony will be held in Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. The commencement processional will begin 20 minutes prior to the ceremony.

Visser has been the minister for several churches in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, New Hampshire and Maine, serving at the First Baptist Church in Waynesburg until his retirement in 2003.

Raja is founder of the Pittsburgh-based computer software company Computer Enterprises Inc., past president of the Mt. Lebanon Commission and TiE Pittsburgh’s business mentoring roundtable, founding chair of the University of Pittsburgh Computer Science Industry Board and host of the KDKA business- and finance-focused radio show “The Raja Show.”
