Rockets need 9 innings for 5-4 win over Mikes
Eli Rafail raced home with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning Monday afternoon in Jefferson-Morgan’s thrilling 5-4 victory against visiting Carmichaels in Section 1-A action.
The Rockets are 1-3 in the section and 4-4 overall, while the Mikes are 2-2 in the section and 6-3 overall.
Rafail walked to lead off the bottom of the ninth. Isaac Dean was safe on a throwing error with Rafail moving to third. David Blaker was intentionally walked to load the bases.
With the infield drawn in, Jake Bissett hit a slow dribbler to third base and Rafail beat the throw home for the winning run.
The Mikes had a chance in the top of the inning. Joel Spishock’s high fly ball was lost and he ended up at second with a double. A ground out moved Spishock to third.
After a walk and stolen base, a short, but high, fly ball landed barely in the outfield grass. Spishock broke for home, but was tagged out the end the threat.
Jefferson-Morgan led 4-1 after three innings, but the Mikes tied the game with three runs in the top of the fifth inning.
Gage Clark pitched the first eight innings, but Bissett came on in the ninth for the win. Bissett also had a double and single.
Brennan Kozich had a pair of singles for the Rockets.
Spishock had a double and single for the Mikes, as did Darren Krause. Reed Long doubled and Tyler Martin had a pair of hits.
