It did not take long for the Waynesburg University women’s basketball team team to gain a lead Wednesday night against the Thiel Tomcats.

After boasting a 20-point lead at the end of the first quarter, the Yellow Jackets kept that lead to increase their winning streak to three games, defeating Thiel 83-53.

The win boosted their record to 5-2 and 3-0 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.

“The team is playing very well together,” head coach Sam Jones said, “which will help us, going into a big test Saturday against St. Vincent.”

With great defensive play, the Yellow Jackets held the Tomcats to just 34 percent shooting from the field and out-rebounded them 53 to 36. Junior Addy Knetzer led the way for the Yellow Jackets with 13 rebounds and alongside her teammate junior Mackenna Drazich with nine rebounds. Three women on the team scored in double figures, Knetzer with 23, Senior Haley Delaney with 14 points and Drazich with 10 points.

Mackenna Drazich mentioned about the hot start the team had.

“Haley hit three 3 pointers in the first quarter and really set the mood for the rest of the game,” Mackenna said, “Our ball movement and execution put us on a great run and resulted in a solid win for us.”

With great defensive and offensive play, the Jackets were able to build a 31-point lead at one time during the game. The Yellow Jackets held the Tomcats to just five points in the first period.

“I’m very proud of our team, right from the start we wanted it and kept up our intensity the entire game,” Drazich said.

Despite having 16 turnovers, the women’s basketball team never trailed during the game and outscored the Tomcats in every period besides one.

“Some of the turnovers we had were out of control, some were sloppy turnovers,” Jones said. “We will do better in the upcoming game.”

This game increased Knetzer’s double-double total on the season to six.

Waynesburg will look to continue its winning ways on Saturday, at home against St. Vincent. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:30 P.M.
