High school and middle school students were evacuated from the Brownsville Area School District Wednesday morning after the discovery of a bomb threat.

The district confirmed that a note of a bomb threat was discovered at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

It was not released where the note was found or specifics of the threat.

“We are following safety procedures,” said Brownsville Area School District Superintendent Phil Savini in a statement.

Savini said the district followed safety procedures and evacuated approximately 1,000 students from the high school and middle school and 80 of those school’s staff members to California University of Pennsylvania.

As a precautionary measure, Savini said the high school and middle school buildings were searched and cleared by members of the state police and their search dogs.

“These precautions were taken to ensure the safety of the students and staff,” said Savini.

Savini continued to state that the students and staff began returning to the schools at 11:30 am.

“The investigation is ongoing through the state police,” Savini stated, adding that if the person responsible is found, they will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Savini commended the students and staff for their cooperation through the process as well as those who helped out.

“I want to thank California University, all of their support staff, Hiller Volunteer Fire Department, Southside Volunteer Fire Department and all of the Police Departments that supported our district during this process,” Savini said.
