Last Friday night, current Waynesburg students and prospective students filled the  Beehive for a game night sponsored by the Student Activities Board. Uno,  Cranium and countless other games could be seen at each table.

It is not unusual at Waynesburg University to have events like this, but what was unique to this night was that it fell on the same day as an overnight visit.

During an overnight visit, prospective college students can stay on campus overnight with Waynesburg students to see what life is like at the university. Bingo and other games were already on the calendar for the night, but when it was realized that there would be dozens of potential students on campus, a late night breakfast buffet was added.

Kyle Digiandomenico, who works in the Admissions office, said it gave the high school students an idea of what goes on at Waynesburg.

“It gives students a realistic idea of what it would be like to be a Yellow Jacket,” said Digiandomenico. “We did the overnight so they could see what residence life was all about, the bingo and late night breakfast to see a glimpse of student activities.”

The overnight guests were not the only ones in attendance. Waynesburg students from every class congregated in the Beehive for a chance to socialize on a Friday evening.

Student Senate President Junior Michael Merten believes Waynesburg could benefit from more events like this.

“It’s a great idea. We should do it more often,” said Merten. “It gives people a chance to come together who might not get the opportunity to do so. Plus, breakfast food is great.”

The night started with bingo at 8 p.m. and continued on with various other games. At 10 p.m., a buffet of breakfast foods was brought out for the hungry students. It included scrambled eggs, pancakes and sausage links as well as a choice of orange juice or coffee to drink.

Sophomore history major Katie Kondrick is a huge supporter of campus events and said this one was even a little bit more special.

“It’s a great stress reliever after a long, long week of work,” said Kondrick. “I really enjoyed this time, specifically because I got to see how the prospective students interacted with each other–building new friendships and memories that they will have when they come here.”

Digiandomenico believes the event was a hit for both current and potential students.

“I think the overnight was a great success. I personally attended the evening’s events and it was great to see current students building relationships with prospective students,” Digiandomenico said. “The idea is to show them the family that is already here at Waynesburg and to welcome them to be a part of that. It was a great atmosphere. I heard lots of laughter and saw smiling faces.”
