The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission has voted to raise the speed limit on the entire highway from 65 mph to 70 mph. A spokesperson from the Commission says that bumping the speed to 70 is in line with the speed people are actually driving. Do you agree with the move? Any concerns that with people driving faster there will be more accidents or that the accidents will be more serious?

“The speed limit should be more like 80. if you’re going 65, you’re going to get run over.”

“They have studies that show the accidents have actually gone down when the speeds have been raised.”

“We all drive that fast anyway. Why not just do away with speed limits altogether.”

“I think the new speed limit is fine. I think accidents happen because people drive too close to the cars in front of them. That’s why there are massive pile-ups. When you follow too close and there is a problem in front of you, there is no time to stop your car. Stop following so closely and accidents will diminish.”

“I agree with you. Being a retired insurance claims adjuster, I can tell you that at least 75 percent of the accidents I investigated were those of rear-end hits. Following too close and inattentive driving were the main causes of accidents.”

“The only issue with the increase in the speed limit is the poor condition of the road surface. As a former resident of Pennsylvania, the road conditions have always seemed to be in need of repair. Every time I come home there seems to be road construction on Interstates 79 and 70. They must be using asphalt not concrete. Concrete costs more on the initial construction, but there are less costs for maintenance. It’s time our government started spending more money for infrastructure. And Pennsylvania would be a good place to start.”

“When the Turnpike opened there was no speed limit. Some people did Irwin to Carlisle in about an hour and a half.”

“Just drive!”

“And don’t text while you’re driving, especially on the turnpike.”

“I set my cruise at 73 anyways, so what is the big difference.”

“Hey, can we get 150? Let’s make it interesting. That would be fun.”

“Higher speed limits will cause more deaths. There’s no way around that.”

“Why is everyone in such a big rush?”
