Act 80 Day scheduled

There will be no school for students in Albert Gallatin Area School District on Nov. 8. Teachers will report for a full day to participate in professional development activities.

Parent-teacher days set

Uniontown Area School District will hold parent-teacher conferences for students in all grades Nov. 9-10.

Conferences will be scheduled by appointment and by open house.

Students will report to school at the regular time. Lunches will be served both days prior to early dismissal in all buildings.

The dismissal times will be as follows:

n Elementary — Benjamin Franklin (first group), 12:05 p.m.; Benjamin Franklin (second group), 12:30 p.m.; Lafayette (first group), 12:05 p.m.; Lafayette (second group), 12:30 p.m.; Franklin, 12:15 p.m.; Menallen, 12:15 p.m.; Marclay, 12:30 p.m.; Wharton, 12:30 p.m.

n Secondary — A.J. McMullen, 12:15 p.m.; Benjamin Franklin (grades 6-8), 11:20 a.m.; Lafayette Middle, 11:20; Uniontown Area High School, 11:30 a.m.

Conferences planned

Laurel Highlands School District will hold its first day of annual parent-teacher conferences from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 14. Students will not report to school.

Parents of elementary students will have scheduled appointments with their classroom teacher while parents of middle school and high school students may report to the schools during any of the identified times.

A second day of parent-teacher conferences will be held Nov. 23. Students will be dismissed early from school that day:

n High School students will be released at 11 a.m., and parent conferences are from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

n Middle School students will be released at 11:30 a.m., and parent conferences are from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

n Elementary school students will be released at noon, and parent conferences are from noon to 1:30 p.m.

Additionally, students will not report to school Nov. 8.

FAFSA assistance offered

The financial aid office at California University of Pennsylvania will offer free, personalized assistance for families of college-bound students who are completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at 7 p.m. Nov. 15 in the campus Convocation Center.

Attendees should bring all required documents, including 2015 federal tax returns. College-bound students are welcome to attend, or parents/guardians may attend on their own.

Optional tours of the campus begin at 6 p.m.

Talk scheduled

Alexander “Nick” Nichols, retired chief operating officer of nonprofit Eastern Minority Supplier Development Council, will be the featured speaker for this month’s CEO Conversations series at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus, at 12:15 p.m. Nov. 16.

In his position, Nichols helped enforce the council’s mission of developing business opportunities for minority-owned businesses by certifying and linking them to corporations and public agencies.

The event, which is free of charge and open to the public, will take place in the university’s student center on the lower level of the Williams Building.

Credit fair slated

Westmoreland County Community College will hold a credit fair for former students who have not completed a credential.

The event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon and from 3 to 6 p.m. Nov. 17 in the admissions office at the Youngwood campus.

Admissions staff will review credits earned and advise students on courses required to complete their degree, diploma or certificate. Students can also receive assistance to schedule for the spring term.

Workshop set

Waynesburg University’s Department of English and Foreign Languages will hold a creative writing workshop for high school students and teachers at 10 a.m. Nov. 18.

The goal of the workshop is to give high school students the opportunity to engage their imaginations and strengthen their writing skills through writing exercise provided by workshop facilitators.

Open house planned

Champion Christian School will hold open house events at its north campus in Donegal and south campus in Indian Head from 4 to 7 p.m. Dec. 1.

The south campus admits students to preschool, kindergarten and grades 1-4; the north campus hosts students in preschool and grades 5-12. Attendees can tour the facilities, meet staff and speak with teachers.

A kindergarten readiness seminar will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the south campus for parents of children entering kindergarten next year.

The event is a free to attend and open to the public.
