Lady Roaring Lions rally past Butler CC, 73-48

Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus, trailed by four after one quarter of play but rallied to defeat Butler Community College, 73-48, on Monday at Penn State Fayette in women’s basketball action.

The Lady Roaring Lions (2-3) trailed, 15-11, after the first quarter, but outscored Butler CC, 18-13, in the second to take a 29-28 lead at halftime.

Fayette extended its lead to 52-41 after the third, and outscored Butler CC (0-1) by 14 points in the fourth.

The Lady Roaring Lions shot 28-73 from the field, including 6-18 from 3-point range and made 11-19 free throws. Butler was 19-60 from the field, but just 2-14 from 3-point range and 8-22 at the line.

Penn State Fayette out rebounded the visitors, 47-39, and had 14 steals.

Laurel Highlands grad Haley Moreland led Fayette in scoring with 21 points on nine field goals and 3-4 shooting at the line. Teammate and Albert Gallatin grad Courtney Haines had 16 points on seven field goals, including one 3-pointer, and was 1-5 at the foul line.

Pittsburgh Obama Academy product and Lady Roaring Lions senior Taylor Smith had a double-double with 14 points on four field goals and was 6-8 at the line. She also grabbed 14 rebounds.

Kayla Yorko (Jefferson-Morgan) had 12 points on four 3-point field goals after coming off the bench.

Lyndsey Huhn (California High School) had seven points on three field goals and was 1-2 at the line. Hannah Kline (Frazier) made one 3-point field goal for Penn State Fayette. Siteri Tale (Laurel Highlands) and Lashaundria Gillaspie (Monessen) saw action for the Lady Roaring Lions.

Butler’s Julie Baxter had 29 points on 14 field goals and was 1-12 at the foul line to lead all scorers. She also pulled down 12 rebounds.

Penn State Fayette returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Point Park at 6 p.m.

High school hockey

Trinity 9, Elizabeth Forward 3 — Nathan Hilzendeger scored four goals to lead Trinity past Elizabeth Forward, 10-3, on Monday night in Division 2 PIHL action at Rostraver Ice Garden.

Hilzendger also added an assist for the Hillers (4-2-0) to complete a five-point night.

Trinity scored five goals in the first period, including one by Hilzendeger to take a 5-1 lead. Hilzendeger scored both of the Hillers’ goals in the second and one in a three-goal third period.

Trinity opened the scoring on a Ryan Broaddrick goal at 5:06 of the first. William Beitler added the assist. The Warriors (1-5-1) tied the game at 8:41 when Michael Vasko set up Matthew Hickey for his first of two goals.

Hilzendeger put in an unassisted goal 26 seconds later for a 2-1 lead and the Hillers extended their lead to 3-1 when Colton Clingermanstang set up Beitler for another score 30 seconds later at 9:37.

Tyler Piatt netted the game winner for the Hillers when he scored on the power player at 12:17 of the first. Jacob Snyder and A Shon Burgess assisted on the goal for a 4-1 advantage.

Snyder capped off the period for Trinity with a shot-handed goal at 14:14 of the first and a 5-1 lead. Hilzendeger added the assist.

Hilzendeger scored at 5:00 of the second for a 6-1 lead but the Warriors’ Tyler Brakeall got his team back into the game when he scored on the power play at 8:48 of the second that cut the Hillers’ lead to 6-2. Michael Vasko and Hickey assisted on the goal.

Hilzendeger netted the hat trick at 16:59 of the second on an unassisted goal for a 7-2 lead going into the third.

Broaddrick’s second goal of the game provided Trinity with a 8-2 lead at 8:23 of the third and Snyder added an unassisted score at 9:32 for a 9-2 advantage for the Hillers.

Blake Huck set up Hickey’s second goal at 12:30 of the third and Elizabeth Forward trailed 9-3.

It was only fitting that Hilzendeger would add the final goal. He scored off an assist from Anthony Santi at 13:06 of the third and a 10-3 lead.

Trinity’s John Popielarcheck stopped 28 of 31 shots on goal, and the Warriors’ Bryce Hanna made 38 saves on 48 shots on goal.

Both teams return to the ice on Thursday when Trinity plays Connellsville at 9:20 p.m. and Elizabeth Forward heads south to play in Morgantown at 7:15 p.m.

Men’s Basketball

Penn State Fayette 92, Butler CC 79 — Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus, won its first game this season with a 92-79 victory over Butler Community College in non-conference men’s basketball action on Monday at Penn State Fayette.

Fayette led, 45-30, after the first half, and Butler CC outscored the Roaring Lions, 49-47, in the second half. Penn State Fayette was 33-79 from the field for 41.8 percent, and was 8-31 from 3-point range. Fayette shot 18-25 at the foul line for 72 percent.

Butler CC was 24-54 from the field for 44.4 percent, including 6-21 from behind the arc (28.6 percent). Butler was 25-31 (80.6 percent) at the foul line.

Dominick Jackson led Fayette (1-2) in scoring with 17 points on 5-13 shooting, including one 3-pointer, and was 6-6 at the foul line. Teammate Marvin Sidon had 15 points on 5-8 shooting, including 3-4 from 3-point range.

Spencer Perieff added 14 points on 5-15 shooting, including one 3-pointer, and was 3-5 at the foul line for the Roaring Lions.

Charleroi graduate Anthony Bristol scored seven points for Penn State Fayette on 2-6 shooting, including 1-3 from 3-point range and was 2-2 at the line.

Uniontown graduates Jordan Pratt and Benjamin Watson added nine points apiece. Watson pulled down eight rebounds for the Roaring Lions.

California High School’s Atrayo Matthews scored nine points for coach Mookie John’s team. Jamar Dues (Uniontown) scored three points and Samuel Haines (Albert Gallatin) added two for Fayette.

Blake Kosor (Yough High School), Tanner Huffman (California) and Steven Smoggie (Carmichaels) saw action for the Roaring Lions.

Brandon Record and Garret McHenry scored shared high-game honors with 21 points apiece.

Cal U 100, Davis & Elkins 92 — California University of Pennsylvania outscored Davis & Elkins, 21-13, in overtime to earn a 100-92 non-conference victory in men’s basketball action on Monday night at Cal U’s Convocation Center.

The Vulcans (2-1) were led by freshman Roman Creighton, who scored 27 points on 10-17 shooting, including 1-6 from 3-point range, and was 6-12 at the foul line.

Mike Stevenson added 15 points and pulled down 9 rebounds for the Vulcans. Teammates Nick Miller (13) and Daniel Sapp (12) were in double figures for first-year coach Kent McBride.

Cal U led 43-40 at halftime, and extended its lead to 14 points with 15:01 remaining, but Davis & Elkins rallied to tie the game at 79-79 to force overtime.

The Vulcans begin Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play on Saturday when they visit Kutztown. The tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
