Men’s Soccer Gains Second Win of the Season

Waynesburg University Men’s soccer team traveled to Latrobe and defeated Pitt-Greensburg by a final score of 3-1.
The Thursday, Sept. 15, night game gave the men’s team their second win of the season and their first road victory. In the matchup, sophomore Austin Zurik and freshman Justin Buberl both scored for the team in the victory. The third goal of the game was ruled an own goal by Pitt-Greensburg.
Pitt-Greensburg scored first in the 20th minute with a goal by senior Jake Lauderbaugh. Waynesburg offense picked up pace after the goal and four minutes later put in its first goal of the game with a goal by Zurik assisted by Buberl. Right before the end of the half, Waynesburg would go up 2-1 in the 39th minute due to an own goal by Pitt-Greensburg.
Looking back on the first half of the game, coach Heethuis said he was impressed with how the team handled giving up the first goal of the matchup.
“I was proud of the guy’s response,” said Heethuis. “We came back and scored, so that was really nice.”
After three goals came in the first half of the game alone, the second half of the match was much more sparing in the goals column. However, coming in the 90th minute of the nonconference matchup, the Yellow Jackets put the nail in the coffin with a goal from the top of the 18-yard box by Buberl.
The game, which was played on Latrobe High School’s field, was challenging due to the field size said head coach Brad Heethuis.
“The [field] was a little different setting,” said Heethuis. “It was tough to posses the ball because the field was small.”
Prior to the matchup, over the previous 4 games for the Yellow Jackets, they were only able to put in one goal coming against Pitt-Bradford on Sept. 3. Heethuis said the midfielders were a contribution to the night’s victory.
“Our center midfielders played well,” said Heethuis. “We had scored one goal [coming into the game] and now we score three.”
The young Waynesburg team is only 5 games into the season and now, already, have more wins than the team had last year. The next game on the schedule for the Waynesburg men’s soccer team is the nonconference matchup Capital University, the team will travel to Columbus, Ohio on Saturday, Sept. 17, for the road game which is set to kick off at 4 p.m.
