On Saturday, Sept. 17, the Waynesburg University women’s soccer team traveled to Capital University to take on the winless Crusaders (1-4). The Crusaders would take a 5-0 nothing victory dropping the Yellow Jackets to 2-4(0-0) on the year.

The Yellow Jackets were only able to put up six shots, four of which were on goal, while the crusaders had 25 shots with 13 being on goal. Though not a strong performance form the Jackets, head coach Laura Heethuis thought the team can overcome the difficulties.

“It was a tough game for us we, didn’t get the result we wanted,” said Heethuis. “I think we can improve in certain areas to fight a little more, the other team was very technical, we knew that going in.”

The goals were scored by Becca Cartmill, Jordan Fike, Monique Hanayik Eryn Bernard, Amanda Kachaylo for the Crusaders. At halftime the score was just 1-0 Crusaders, but the second half provided Heethuis tired bodies on her hands after playing a strong first half.

“There were moments that we were able to string passes from one to another and we were able to adjust,” said Heethuis. “We just didn’t have it for a full 90 minutes or long enough to make it past them. I think when you got a young team they’re still getting to know not only each other but themselves as a player, especially coming into the college atmosphere.”

It has been a learning experience for the inexperienced player but one player has stood out in Heethuis eyes: sophomore defender McKenzie Schaffer who has shown improvements from freshman year.

“I challenge [Schaffer] quite a bit on her communication, last year as a freshman she was pretty quiet on the field,” said coach Heethuis. “But played big (and) well as far as vocally she’s very quiet, now this year I am starting to hear her yell things out and call for the ball she’s really stepping up an leading us in the back.”

The women’s head into the week coming off a 3-2 victory over Franciscan University at home.
