Scotties down Rockets at PVCC, 265-337
BULLSKIN TWP. — The eclipse never materialized in northern Fayette County Monday afternoon, blocked by rain showers and cloud cover.
But, no matter to Southmoreland and Jefferson-Morgan, as the Scotties opened the high school golf season with a 265-337 non-section home win over the Rockets at Pleasant Valley Country Club.
Ryan Lemmon was medalist with a 7-over 41, three strokes better than the Scotties’ No. 1 man Josh Redding.
Redding had an off round, and expects to rebound as he makes a bid to qualify for another state championship.
“I had no flow today,” said the senior. “I had a good start. I just didn’t feel right. I have days like this. It happens.”
Redding already has committed to a school, so he is ready for a final run.
“I’ve committed to York. That takes the pressure off,” said Redding, adding, “I’d like to make it back to states.”
Zach Holoman (53), Dakota Kaylor (62) and Walter Ulishney (65) closed out the scoring for Southmoreland.
Bobby Coles was the low man for the Rockets with 56. Kyle Clayton (63), Megan Pecjak (58), Bryce Bedilion (64) and Jesse Wolfe (96) also counted in the final score.
“They need to play,” said veteran coach John Curtis after his squad’s first official match. “They haven’t played a lot over the summer.
“The golf program was cut, but the parents raised money to get the program back.”
“We’re at square one. We’re starting over. They have so much to learn,” continued Curtis. “It’s such a short season. There’s not a lot of time to practice.
“They have to play. That’s what I have to instill into them. We have to learn together.”
