Juniors Lead Men’s Indoor Track & Field at WVU
After six weeks without a meet, the Waynesburg University men’s indoor track & field team returned to action Saturday, Jan. 14, in the West Virginia University Open.
There was no team scoring at the event, but head coach Jason Falvo was pleased with his team’s performance.
“We put a huge focus on our training plan over Christmas Break and challenged the team to stay on point with the training,” Falvo said. “They did a solid job of this, which should help us as me move forward.”
Despite the break, junior Mark Minjock took second in the 60-meter dash, posting a time of 7.25 seconds. On top of that, Minjock placed sixth in the 200-meter dash (24.17) and eighth in the 400-meter dash (59.40).
Junior Matt Shinkle ran to a fifth-place finish in the 400-meter, posting a time of 56.57 seconds. Shinkle also took third place in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.63 seconds.
Junior Mitch Kendra led the Yellow Jackets in the field events. The Presidents’ Athletic Conference outdoor champion last season placed second Saturday with a height of 4.10 meters (13-1.5).
In the long jump, senior James Steele jumped to a fourth-place finish and a distance of 6.09 meters (19-11.75).
Senior Jonathon Hager finished fifth in both the shot put and the weight throw with tosses of 22.40 meters (40-8.25) and 12.52 (41-1), respectively.
The men’s indoor track & field team travels to Granville, Ohio, on Saturday, Jan. 21, to compete in the Denison Lid-Lifter.
