Lacrosse Drops ORLC Matchup at Thiel College
The Waynesburg University women’s lacrosse team made the trip to Greeneville, Pennsylvania, to compete against Thiel College in Ohio River Lacrosse Conference play Wednesday, March 29.
The Yellow Jackets trailed by just three goals late in the second half, but couldn’t complete their comeback, falling 17-11 to the Tomcats.
“I feel like my team was prepared going into this match up,” said head coach Stephanie Benkowski. “I feel like we executed very well and we played the best game that we’ve played all season.”
Thiel (1-4, 1-0) took a 3-0 lead after just two minutes of play. Waynesburg (0-6, 0-2) got on the board during the fifth minute of play courtesy of senior attacker Abbie Miller. After Waynesburg got on the board the Tomcats answered with three more scores to take a 6-1 advantage.
Goals by seniors, defender Danielle Beckford and attacker Holly Bachman, trimmed the deficit back to three goals late in the opening period and set off a back-and-forth run of scoring from both sides. By the time the dust had settled on the first half, Waynesburg trailed 9-6 heading into halftime.
The second half started much like the first, in that a quick start for the home team allowed it to build a sizeable 13-7 lead. Waynesburg answered with three scores comprised of goals by Miller, Bachman and senior defender Kaitlyn Wetzel to cut its deficit in half.
The two teams started to traded goals, making the score 14-11 with just under 10 minutes showing on the clock. The Tomcats closed out the contest with the final three scores of the match.
Benkowski said she noticed a few things her team needs to work on to keep being in games moving forward.
“We need to work on our check and we need to do them correctly,” said Benkowski.
Miller’s four goals are the most tallied by a Waynesburg player in a game this year.
Freshman goalkeeper Christina Bauer racked up 13 saves over 60 minutes in net.
“We are going to watch a log of film from our last few matches and film on Mount St. Joseph to prepare for our game,” said Benkowski.
Waynesburg is back in action on Saturday, April 1, with a road trip to The College of Mt. St. Joseph. Start time for the ORLC matchup is scheduled for 4 p.m.
