Lady Cougars hand on to edge Lady Falcons, 3-2
Yough held a 3-0 lead but had to hang on to down Brownsville, 3-2, on Wednesday in Section 3-AA girls’ soccer play at Cougar Mountain.
The Lady Cougars (7-1, 10-1) took a 3-0 lead on Justine Appolonia’s hat trick. Appolonia, who has 22 goals this season, scored at 23:29 and 20:12 of the first half, and added her final tally at 35:42 of the second. The first-half goals were off penalty kicks, as Appolonia was fouled in the penalty box and the Lady Falcons (5-4, 10-4-1) were called for a hand ball in the box. Amber Biros assisted on the striker’s third goal.
Brownsville’s Gracie Stetson cut the deficit to one with goals at 32:24 and 19:05.
Yough had 15 shots on goal, and its backline limited the Lady Falcons to three. Lady Cougars keeper Sara Krofcheck made one save.
Yough hosts Derry Area (1-7, 1-11) on Saturday at 10 a.m. in a Section 3-AA match.
The Lady Falcons host McGuffey (1-7, 2-8) on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
