Local doubles teams advance to consolation finals

California’s Kristina Luko and Sydney Smichnick and Mount Pleasant’s Mary Smithnosky and Abbey Scekeres will play in the Section 1-AA doubles tournament consolation finals after losing in the semifinals Monday.

The two local doubles teams earned a spot into next week’s WPIAL Championship by advancing to the semifinals.

Luko and Smichnick, seeded fifth, opened with a 10-1 victory over Mount Pleasant’s Katelyn Loughner and Maddy Miller. The Lady Trojans’ top doubles team defeated Southmoreland’s Hayley Robbins and Amelia Echard, the fourth seed, in the quarterfinals, 10-2.

Greensburg Central Catholic’s Marlayna Verenna and Anna Vitale, the top seed, defeated Luko and Sydney Smichnick, 6-3, 6-2.

The third-seeded Smithnosky and Scekeres opened with a 10-5 win over Washington’s Toni and Sam Maurer. They defeated Greensburg Central Catholic’s Erin Schulte and Claire Hacker, 10-5.

South Park’s Caylee Jackson and Elyssa Pemu, the second seeds, defeated Smithnosky and Scekeres in the semifinals, 7-5, 6-2.

Southmoreland’s Galatea Zeglin and Tessa Utzy lost in the first round to Schulte and Hacker, 10-3. California’s Gabby Crawford and Abby Hustava fell in the preliminary round to Washington’s Alli Resetar and Morgan McCracken, 10-4.

Connellsville’s No. doubles team of Leah McIntosh and Sydney Dally lost Kiski Area’s Kylie Zaffina and Alexis Shaffer, 10-8, in the first round of the Section 1-AAA tournament. The Lady Falcons’ Harley Martin and Shelby Lessman lost in the opening round, 10-4, to Penn-Trafford’s Sophia Pernick and Rachel Mills.
