Yellow Jackets can’t stop Case Western Reserve’s offense in 56-21 setback

Waynesburg University’s defense had trouble in slowing down No. 21 Case Western Reserve University in a 56-21 setback on Saturday in Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) action at Cleveland, Ohio.

The Spartans (2-0, 3-0) jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on a six-yard run by Jacob Burke and a six-yard passing score from Rob Cuda to Aaron Aguilar at 2:51 of the first.

The Yellow Jackets (0-2, 0-4) cracked the scoreboard at 4:01 of the second when JaWuan Jones pulled in a 35-yard reception from Tyler Perone and a 14-7 Case Western Reserve lead after the first of three PATs by Garret Guthrie.

Burke’s five-yard touchdown run extended the Spartans’ advantage to 21-7 at 2:14 of the second after the third of six PATs by Ben Carniol.

Justin Phan’s 29-yard touchdown reception from Cuda gave the home team a 28-7 halftime lead.

Waynesburg kept fighting in the third, and cut the deficit to 28-14 on Chad Walker’s 13-yard reception from Perone at 12:26, but Case Western’s offense responded with two touchdowns on Burke’s two-yard run and Aguilar’s nine-yard reception from Cuda for a 42-14 advantage after three.

Myles Anthony’s two-yard run and the first of two PATs by Weston Salerno pushed the Spartans to a 49-14 lead at 11:19 of the fourth.

Jones caught his second touchdown pass, a five yarder from Perone, for a 49-21 Case Western advantage at 5:57.

Sam Jenkins’ 45-yard touchdown run capped off the scoring for the Spartans with 1:19 remaining.

Burke led all rushers with 137 yards on 21 carries and three touchdowns. Cuda was 17 of 26 for 3124 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Phan led all receivers with 93 yards on six receptions and one touchdown.

Perone was 18 of 32 for 181 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Austin Wilson led the visitors in rushing with 69 yards on 15 attempts. Wilson pulled in six receptions for 47 yards.

The Jackets’ John-Glen Davis (Waynesburg Central) had five tackles (1 solo, 4 assists), a forced fumble and half a tackle for loss. Teammates Tristan Sandrosky (Uniontown) had three tackles (1 solo, 2 assists) and Joe Headlee (Jefferson-Morgan had one total stop.

Waynesburg University returns to John F. Wiley Stadium on Saturday in PAC action when it hosts Grove City at 1:30 p.m. for Homecoming.
