First-place Lady Raiders rout Brownsville, 10-1

WAYNESBURG — The Waynesburg Central girls soccer squad continued its dominance in Section 3-AA this season with a 10-1 rout of Brownsville Wednesday night.

In seven section games this year, the Lady Raiders (10-1, 7-0) have outscored the opposition by 61-6. Four of the goals allowed this season were in a 7-4 win over Yough last week.

“I have really been impressed with both our defense and our offense in this stretch of games,” Waynesburg coach Joe Kijowski said. “They work together and without our defense, we couldn’t control the ball like we do. When we can’t control the ball, we don’t score.

“We learned a lot about ourselves after that Yough game. I’m sure it was entertaining, but it was a little bit stressful as a coach to see that many goals scored. But I like how we responded to being down and it was a great learning lesson for us. Yough is very tough.”

Waynesburg was in the attacking zone most of the opening 40 minutes of play, and outshot the Lady Falcons, 15-1, in the first half for a 5-0 advantage at halftime.

Junior Bailey Fudala netted the opening goal for the home team with a shot from 25 yards out at the 37:18 mark of the first half.

“We always like to start fast and get that early 1-0 lead,” Kijowski said. “In any sport, you want to play with the lead and dictate the tempo. Our girls are great starters and there’s no letdown in their play. We just want to attack and have other team’s change their play.”

WPIAL-leading scorer and senior Madison Clayton made it 2-0 with a tally at 29:51. The goal was assisted by freshman Rhea Kijowski.

After an unassisted goal from Kijowski made it 3-0, the freshman assisted on Clayton’s second goal of the night at 14:30. Kijowski made it 5-0 with 11:02 left in the half. That goal was assisted by sophomore Kaley Pell.

In the second half, Waynesburg’s sophomore Kylie Sinn scored a goal with the assist going to Kijowski at 34:27.

The Lady Falcons (8-3-1, 4-3) responded just 20 seconds later, as freshman Gracie Stetson found the back of the net for the visitors. The goal was assisted by junior Mary Lemesh.

With 24:08 remaining in the second half, Clayton totaled the hat trick with a goal. Clayton now has 33 goals on the season and 118 for her career. The goal was assisted by Jillian Kijowski.

The next goal of the night came off the foot of Jillian Kijowski and was assisted by her sister Rhea with 17:45 left in regulation.

Sinn and Fudala each tallied their second goals of the night in the final 11 minutes.

Besides Clayton’s 33 goals, other top scorers for the Lady Raiders are Rhea Kijowski (17), Sinn (9), Jillian Kijowski (8) and Fudala (5).

“Our dynamic offense has really been fun to watch this season,” coach Kijowski said. “We have a lot of kids that can finish around the net. Madison (Clayton) has developed and improved every year, but she has a lot of talent around her. Everyone on this team has gotten better.”

Waynesburg’s freshman McKenzie Booth secured the win in between the pipes with one save, while Brownsville junior goalkeeper Alexis Carson recorded 11 stops.

Brownsville coach Cedar Brunache was unavailable for comment after the game.

Before the section contest, Waynesburg recognized its four seniors on Senior Night: Clayton, Claire Garber, Elle Hampson and Nikita Courtney.

The Lady Falcons hosts Monessen on Saturday in non-section action, while the Lady Raiders are idle until a section match-up at Derry on Monday.

“The second half of the section schedule is going to be critical for us,” coach Kijowski said. “We have a feel of how teams are going to play us, but on the other hand those teams have seen us and know what we are capable of on the field. We try not to change our game and just play our style. Possession and control of the ball are our focal points.”
