Leopards sweep triangular meet

Belle Vernon (boys) 89, Laurel Highlands 53; Belle Vernon (boys) 109, Mount Pleasant 40; Laurel Highlands (boys) 80, Mount Pleasant 69 – Belle Vernon won a pair of Section 2-AAA meets Tuesday, sweeping past Laurel Highlands and Mount Pleasant to open the regular season.

The Leopards defeated Laurel Highlands, 89-53, and Mount Pleasant, 109-40. The Mustangs salvaged a split with an 80-69 victory over the Vikings.

Brett Seich (1,600, 4:44.3), Hunter Martin (300 intermediate hurdles, 43.0; long jump, 20-5), Seth Yankosky (triple jump, 40-11), Derek Thomas (shot put, 39-1), and Ryan Marek (discus, 116-2) all had overall individual first-place finishes for Belle Vernon.

Martin set the school record in the 110 high hurdles, finishing in 14.08 seconds.

The Leopards also won the 400 relay (46.2) and 3,200 relay (9:10).

Junior Saluca (110 high hurdles, 14.07), Miguel Brumfield (100, 11.1), Brendan Kopich (800, 2:09.8), Malik Ramsey (200, 23.0), and 1,600 relay (3:58) had overall first-place finishes for the Mustangs.

The Vikings’ Wayne Canady was first overall in the high jump (5-8), as well as Nick Secosky in the pole vault (8-0).
