Lady Falcons take advantage of errors, win 10-0
CONNELLSVILLE — The Connellsville Lady Falcons took advantage of three errors by Laurel Highlands to pick up their second straight win in Section 2-AAAAA, shutting out the Fillies, 10-0, in six innings.
“We had good win Tuesday, and we were able to jump on Laurel Highlands with a good first inning today,” Connellsville’s John Burd said. “Hopefully, we’re starting to get to the way I know they can play.”
Mia Burd held the Fillies (0-2, 2-2) to just two hits on the day, both coming in the top of the first inning, while recording nine strikeouts. She also had a good day at the plate for the Lady Falcons, collecting two hits, one of those a double, and driving in a run.
Jenna Hixson also had a big day at the plate for Connellsville (2-3, 2-4) with three hits, including a triple, and scoring three runs.
The Lady Falcons put up six runs in the bottom of the first taking advantage of three Fillies errors. Burd scored on an error after she singled and moved to second on a passed ball. Hixson singled and Abbi King drew a walk. Hixson scored on a one-out single from Josey Moorhead. An error on the play then allowed King to score. Moorhead and Kylee Yothers both scored on errors and Kaybree Benton scored on Abbi Friguglietti’s ground out to second.
“Errors really did us in today,” LH’s Floyd Shroyer said. “That’s not the way we play. I’ll take full responsibility for today. We didn’t have a good practice and it carried over into today.”
Connellsville added two more runs in the second. Burd lead off with a double and scored on Hixson’s triple. King followed with a fly ball to center to drive in Hixson, increasing the Lady Falcons’ lead to 8-0.
“We haven’t spent too much time outside because of the weather,” Shroyer said. “You can’t work on a lot of game situations in the gym. We need to be on the field. The weather hurts everyone. In my opinion, high school softball should be a fall sport.”
Connellsville added another run in the third when Friguglietti singled moved to second on a passed ball and was sacrificed to third by Kylee Hoover. She scored on Burd’s ground out to second.
Connellsville put the 10-run mercy rule into affect in the bottom of the sixth inning when the Lady Falcons loaded the bases with one out and Hixson beat the throw to the plate on Kylee Yothers’ ground ball.
“I liked the fact we were patient at the plate today,” Burd said. “I think the girls were trying to do too much in the first couple of games, swinging for the fences. If we’re patient and put the ball in play like we did today, we can generate some offense.”
