Mustangs too much for Tigers in 19-3 victory
Laurel Highlands 19, McKeesport 3 – Laurel Highlands showed McKeesport why its No. 2 in the WPIAL Class 5-A Baseball Rankings in a 19-3 victory on Monday in Section 3-AAAAA play at McKeesport.
The Mustangs, who are ranked fifth in the state by MexPreps, improved to 8-0 in section and overall play.
Laurel Highlands held a 2-0 lead after the first inning, and a 7-0 advantage after two before the Tigers (1-7, 2-8) scored three in the bottom of the inning.
LH scored four in the third for an 11-3 lead before putting the 15-run mercy rule into effect with eight runs in the fourth.
Coach Scott DeBerry’s Mustangs had 13 hits, including three apiece by Josh Burns and Travis Sankovich.
Burns had four RBIs, two triples and scored four times, while Sankovich scored three times and had two RBIs. Teammate Mason McManus had two hits, two runs scored and an RBI.
The Mustangs’ Tan Erminio had three RBIs, two runs and doubled. Rich Mehall, Chad Petrush, Nate Zimcoksy and Ian Edenfield each had one base hit. Mehall had two RBIs and Edenfield one. Zimcosky scored twice.
Laurel Highlands’ Greg Lancaster scored two runs and had an RBI. Teammate Alex McLay scored two runs. The Mustangs’ Evan Voyten and Bernie Yocabet scored one run.
Dylan Bohna allowed three earned runs on four hits in three innings to pick up the win. He had two strikeouts and no walks. Elijah Fowler didn’t allow a run or hit in closing things out.
Laurel Highlands was scheduled to play at Franklin Regional on Tuesday, but the game was rained out. The Mustangs have six section games left.
