Cavanaugh, Quarzo still setting the standard
The second round of the WPIAL track & field performance lists has been released and several local athletes remained atop or near the top of their individual event.
The performance list will be posted twice more with the final times, distances and heights recorded by 11:59 a.m. on Wednesday, May 9.
As with the initial posting of the list last week, not all teams have posted their athletes’ results. But, any athlete sitting in the top three is in good standing with less that two weeks to post a mark.
Bentworth’s Brenna Cavanaugh has the fastest time in the Class AA 100 high hurdles and the second-longest mark in the long jump.
Brownsville’s Gionna Quarzo has the best time to date — by nearly 50 seconds — in the Class AA 3,200. Quarzo, Sara and Jessica Vance and Ashton Reposky have the third-fastest time in the 3,200 relay.
Elizabeth Forward has the two best throws in the javelin with Daniel Jacobs and Brianna Spirnak both sitting atop the Class AAA list.
Beth-Center has a 1-2 punch on the Class AA performance list for the discus with Ronald White first and teammate Jordan Blackburn second.
Waynesburg Central has three athletes occupying the top spot on the Class AA list. Daniel Layton has the fastest time in the 110 high hurdles, and is second in the pole vault. Will Behm and Taylor Shriver have the best vaults in the pole vault through the second listing, while Madison Brooks is second in the shot put.
Laurel Highlands’ Junior Salauca has the second-best time in Class AAA in the 110 high hurdles, just a little faster than Belle Vernon’s Hunter Martin.
Uniontown’s David Eitner (javelin) and Maeve Carei (pole vault) sit with the second-best marks in Class AAA.
Section 6-AA rivals Kennedy Kuhns, of Beth-Center, and Marissa Bitonti, of California, are in the top three in Class AA in the javelin. Kuhns is second and Bitonti third.
Yough’s Levi Heltebran has the second-best throw in the shot put in Class AA.
Frazier’s Skye Eicher slipped to No. 2 in the Class AA 100. The sophomore has the third-fastest time in the 200.
Laurel Highlands’ Eli Mitchell (Class AAA triple jump) and Southmoreland’s Austin Keyser (Class AA high jump) both have the third-best jumps to date.
The top 24 times, distances and heights in Class AAA and the best 16 in Class AA advance to the WPIAL Track & Field Championships at Baldwin High School on Thursday, May 17. Athletes have several more opportunities to post a mark, including the FCCA and WCCC championships on Saturday, the Mid Mon Valley Invitational on Monday, the WPIAL team playoffs next week, the annual Baldwin Invitational on Friday, May 4, and several last chance meets before May 9.
