Falcons hold off Rebels, take over sole possession of first place
Brownsville held off a late rally by visiting Seton-La Salle to earn a 7-6 victory in Section 3-AAA baseball action on Monday.
The Falcons (9-2, 8-2) took over sole possession of first place with the win thanks to Mount Pleasant’s loss to Waynesburg Central.
Brownsville took a 7-3 lead into the seventh inning when the Rebels rallied for three runs and put the potential tying run on second base with one out. Falcons left fielder Johnny Havanec preserved the win, however, by making a running catch of a line drive in the gap and throwing to second base to double off the runner and end the game.
Josh Davison had three hits for the Falcons, including a two-run double in the third and an RBI single in the sixth to bring in what proved to be the winning run.
Winning pitcher Trevor Stewart allowed three runs on four hits with three strikeouts and one hit batter in five innings. Rocco Frisco pitched a scoreless sixth in relief of Stewart, but ran into trouble in the seventh. Davison entered and induced the game-ending double-play fly out.
Brody Bagwell and Presto Frost had doubles for Brownsville.
Losing pitcher Dom Popa pitched into the fifth.
The Falcons were coming off a 10-1 win over visiting Waynesburg on Saturday, thanks to an overpowering start by winning pitcher Dylan Brosky. Brosky struck out 17, allowing just one run on two hits and two walks before hitting the pitch-count limit with two outs in the seventh.
Bagwell’s RBI double and D.J. Zimcosky’s run-scoring single highlighted a four-run first inning that put Brownsville in front to stay.
Trey Rohanna and Kyle Shriver doubled for the Raiders’ only two hits.
Losing pitcher Hunter Robinson was touched up for five runs on four hits in 3.1 innings.
