Falcons secure playoff berth with upset victory
The Brownsville offense put up nearly 50 points in the second half Tuesday night to upset visiting Burgettstown, 76-66, and secure a Section 2-AAA playoff berth.
The Falcons improve to 4-7 in the section and 8-11 overall to secure no worse than a tie for fourth place. Brownsville closes the schedule Friday at Beth-Center.
The Blue Devils go to 8-3 in the section and 14-5 overall.
Brownsville trailed at halftime, 33-30, but outscored the Blue Devils in the final 16 minutes, 48-33, to secure the playoff berth.
Shandon Marshall scored a game-high 28 points for the Falcons. Phil Pace added 22.
Ryan Lounder led Burgettstown with 17 points. Max Shaw finished with 12.

Laurel Highlands 77, Ringgold 41 – The Mustangs scored 46 points in the second half Tuesday night as Laurel Highlands secured a 77-41 victory over visiting Ringgold in Section 1-AAAAA action.
Laurel Highlands (7-4, 12-8) led 31-26 at halftime and then outscored the Rams in the second half, 46-15.
Bryce Laskey scored a game-high 35 points for the Mustangs. Conner Basinger added 12.
Jayden Taylor led the Rams (0-11, 2-18) with 18. Demetrius Butler finished with 10.

Monessen 54, Clairton 54 – The Monessen Greyhounds clinched another Section 2-A title Tuesday night with a 54-45 victory at Clairton.
Monessen improves to 9-0 in the section and 12-7 overall. The Bears go to 8-2 in the section and 15-4 overall.
The Greyhounds led 18-10, 36-23 and 48-36 at the quarter breaks.
Lyndon Henderson led Monessen with 19 points. Cory Fleming and Elijahwa Payne scored 10 apiece.
Koran Boyd led Clairton with 15. Khori Fusco added 10.

South Side Area 69, Charleroi 56 – Charleroi led early, but South Side Area rallied in the second half for a 69-56 Section 4-AAA home victory.
The Cougars (2-9, 6-14) led 24-13 after the first quarter and 39-28 at halftime.
The Rams (8-3, 9-10) rallied in the second half, outscoring Charleroi in the final 16 minutes, 41-17.
Marty Foster led the Cougars with 15 points. Joe Caruso finished with 12, and Gino Pellegrini and Lee Zanardini both scored 10.
Nate Statler scored a game-high 17 points for the Rams. Jake McDougal, Logan English and Trevor Roach all scored 14.

South Park 85, Waynesburg Central 68 – Darton McIntire added to his school-record point total with 28, but Waynesburg Central returned home from South Park with an 85-68 loss in Section 3-AAAA action.
The Raiders slip to 1-12 in the section and 4-16 overall. South Park improves to 9-4 in the section and 12-7 overall.
Jake Snodgrass and Damon Smith both scored 17 for South Park. Andrew Graham added 11.

Geibel Catholic 73, Mapletown 48 – Geibel Catholic scored nearly 50 points in the second half Tuesday night to rally past visiting Mapletown, 73-48, in Section 2-A action.
The Gators finish section play with a 4-6 record, improving to 7-15 overall. The Maples slide to 0-10 and 0-21.
Mapletown led 26-22 at halftime, but the Gators outscored the visitors, 28-8, in the third quarter. Geibel closed out the game with a 21-14 fourth quarter.
Cole Kendall led the way for the Gators with 23 points. Enzo Fetsko added 20.
Ryan Carter (13), Lance Stevenson (11), and Ritchy Cacurak (10) were in double figures for Mapletown.

Yough 81, Southmoreland 33 – Jarett Bach and Gamal Marballie provided all the points Yough needed Tuesday night as the visiting Cougars defeated Southmoreland, 81-33, in non-section action.
Bach scored 25 and Marballie added 24 for Yough.
Riley Comforti led the Scotties (4-17) with 10 points.

West Greene 57, Avella 35 – West Greene held Avella to single digits in each quarter Tuesday night for a 57-35 road victory in Section 2-A action.
The playoff-bound Pioneers (6-3, 8-12) led 17-8, 27-17 and 39-26 at the quarter breaks.
Austin Crouse scored a game-high 21 points for West Greene. Nathan Brudnock added 16.
West Greene coach Jim Romanus wasn’t completely satisfied with the victory.
“We played well in spurts,” Romanus said. “I told our guys they have to get prepared for Avella because they will come at us, which they do. They’re a scrappy bunch.
“The message tonight was we had to come out ready to play, and I thought we did. The problem though is we do get sloppy with the ball. Sometimes we think we’re the Golden State Warriors instead of the West Greene Pioneers. So that’s got to get cleaned up.”
Avella was led by Dylan Markle with 13 points.
Girls Basketball
West Greene 69, Bentworth 28 – The West Greene girls scored all the points they needed before halftime Tuesday night for a 69-28 non-section victory over visiting Bentworth.
The Lady Pioneers improve to 19-1 overall, while the Lady Bearcats slip to 3-18.
West Greene led 23-7 after the first quarter and 44-15 at halftime. The home team outscored Bentworth in the second half, 25-13.
McKenna Lampe scored a game-high 18 points for the Lady Pioneers. Kaitlyn Rizor (17), Elizabeth Brudnock (12), and Jersey Wise (11) also scored in double figures.
Jenna Vito led Bentworth with 11 points.
Hockey
Burrell 3, Connellsville 1 – Burrell scored three unanswered goals in the third period, including a pair of power play goals, for a 3-1 road victory at Connellsville in PIHL Division 2 action.
Burrell holds onto second place with 24 points (12-4-0-0). Connellsville is in fourth with 20 points (9-6-0-2). The top eight teams advance to the playoffs.
Tyler Stewart tied the game at 2:24 into the third period on a power play goal.
Dylan Zelonka scored the eventual game-winning goal, another power play effort, at 4:45. Cole Vazzana added an insurance goal at 12:32.
Ryan Brown spotted the Falcons in the final minute of the first period when he converted Luke Wascak’s assist into a goal at 16:29.
The Bucs’ Andrew Burkett made 27 saves to preserve the win. The Falcons’ Sebastian Skarzenski turned aside 21 shots.

Ringgold 5, Trinity 2 – Ringgold remained tied for second place in the PIHL Division 2 standings with a 5-2 road victory at Trinity.
Ringgold is tied in second with 24 points (12-4-0). Trinity holds at 11 points (5-9-0-1).
The game was tied 1-1 after the first period, but goals by Clayton Colecchi, Logan Frahlich and Zachary Kalinowski gave the Rams a 4-2 lead after two periods.
The Rams’ Jacob Booher scored an insurance goal late in the third quarter.
Noah Schroeder assisted on Zeke Devitis’ goal in the first period and finished with three assists.
Evan Cook turned aside 30 shots to preserve the win.
Ringgold had 44 shots on Trinity’s John Popielarcheck, who made 39 saves.
