Lady Pioneers roll past Lady Gators, 70-18
CONNELLSVILLE TWP. — West Greene overpowered Geibel Catholic, 70-18, on Thursday night in Section 2-A girls basketball action at Geibel Catholic High School.
The Lady Pioneers were ranked second in Class A and undefeated in section and overall play.
“I think this year we have more bounce on offense compared to last year,” West Greene coach Jordan Watson said. “Tonight we had eight girls score with two in double figures, and it’s hard to run a defense on us. “We’re much deeper than we were last year, and we also have talented freshmen coming up.”
West Greene (4-0, 11-0) took advantage of the Lady Gators (3-1, 5-5) early in the first quarter. Geibel Catholic didn’t score until 2:07 left in the first.
The Lady Pioneers led, 42-9, at halftime.
West Greene continued to dominate in the second half, outscoring the Lady Gators, 28-9.
The Lady Pioneers forced Geibel Catholic into turning the ball over and scored on their opportunities.
West Greene’s Madison Lampe (17), Kaitlyn Rizor (13), Elizabeth Brudnock (12) and Savannah Pettit (11) were in double figures.
The Lady Gators’ Sara Ehrhardt, Gillian Yourish and Gabby Yourish scored four points apiece.
“Coming in, we knew this was probably the best, or the second best, team in Single A, and they’ve got a really good shot at a WPIAL championship this year,” Geibel Catholic head coach Patrick Blackstone said. “We told the girls before the game to not lie down and play tough the entire game.
“Even though the score got out of hand, our girls never stopped and played with intensity, so they did what we asked of them.”
Geibel Catholic hosts South Side Beaver (9-4, 4-2) in a non-section game on Saturday, while West Greene hosts Avella (2-1, 6-5) in section play on Tuesday.
