With week one of Get Fit underway, the contestants now have a better understanding of realistic goal setting.

The nine contestants in this year’s challenge at CrossFit U-Town met with gym owner Jason Tungate Thursday to better understand how to set attainable goals.

“When I write it down, I’m a lot better at doing the things I need to do in order to meet it. Start doing that,” he said, encouraging the contestants to start journaling their workouts and fitness journey.

That being said, Jason and his wife Amy expressed the important of small goals, or targets, to help you reach you overarching goals.

“There are smaller things in there you want to work out, things you can do to get you there,” Jason said.

For instance, he said, if a long-term goal is to be able to do pull ups, short term goals might be reaching out to Jason or other coaches or gym members for guidance. Another goal might be to find someone who once was unable to do pull ups, but learned how to.

“Ask yourselves, what can I do to get there?” he said.

The contestants went around the room, sharing their personal reasons for joining the challenge, many of which included bettering themselves for the sake of their families. Ray Newhouse Jr. said he wants to get ahead of a potential battle against high blood pressure and diabetes.

Kathy Reed wants to gain upper body strength and get over a plateau, while Zach Hixson said he looks forward to the structure and motivation of a program.

Randy Cantrell joked that he once thought he was in shape, though he quickly realized he wasn’t. His wife and fellow contestant Shellie Cantrell said she enjoys the camaraderie and group atmosphere.

“There’s accountability here, and you guys are already building relationships. That helps, too,” Tungate said.

He also reminded contestants that a lot of what they accomplish at CrossFit will lend themselves to other areas.

“If we’re chasing performance, we’re going to eat good, we’re going to stretch, we’re going to workout and do all these things — and we’re going to start looking better,” he said. “If you chase one thing, usually it’s at the expense of something else. But if we chase fitness, it lends itself well to all these things we want to accomplish. Keep that it mind.”

During their first Get Fit meeting, Tungate also asked the crew what their thoughts were on the baseline exam, which including testing each competitor’s ability to perform pushups, squats, bench presses and a sled push.

“It was crazy,” Alexandra Griffith said with a laugh.

Other contestants agreed that they weren’t fans of the sled push or benching weight. Randy Cantrell said the burpees were the worst.

Fresh off the mindset of setting goals and attaining overall fitness, Tungate said with a laugh that he thought it would be fitting to start the official challenge off with something similar to the test.

Amy led the crew through warmups before Tungate started them on “15 minutes of fun.”

Within the first several minutes, contestants sported a sheen of sweat on their foreheads as they powered through what he called a WOD — workout of the day. For them, it included 10 kettle bell swings, 10 step-ups, five burpees. The contestants were asked to complete as many reps as possible, keeping track with a stack of poker chips placed beside their wooden blocks.

Tungate said it’ll be particularly challenging for the first month or so as contestants “try to figure out how to make your body do what you want it to do.”

By the end of the workout, contestants compared their experiences and cleaned up their materials while Tungate reminded them to come to open gym times, classes, and a fuel class every Saturday, during which they’ll learn more about nutrition and share advice.
