Falcons top Charleroi, claim sole possession of section title
Brownsville won’t be sharing its Section 3-AAA baseball title with anyone. The Falcons made sure of that on Friday when they used a five-run fifth inning to propel them past visiting Charleroi, 9-3, to clinch sole possession of first place.
It is the fourth consecutive year Brownsville has earned a section plaque.
The Cougars (11-4, 7-4) trailed 2-0 after two innings and 3-1 after four before evening the score with two runs in the top of the fifth.
Dylan Brosky capped the five-run outburst in the bottom of the inning with a three-run homer to put the Falcons (11-2, 10-2) back in front to stay, 8-3.
Winning pitcher Trevor Stewart allowed the three runs on four hits with no walks and two strikeouts in going five innings for coach Skooter Roebuck’s squad. Josh Davison finished up with two scoreless innings of relief.
Zach Whitlock had three hits and D.J. Zimcosky smacked a pair of doubles for Brownsville. Brosky had four RBIs.
Justin Day had three hits, Geno Pellegrini added a pair of singles and Hunter Perry doubled for Charleroi. Zach Usher took the loss.

Morgantown W.Va 1, Laurel Highlands 0 – Laurel Highlands ran into a tough left-handed pitcher on Saturday in a 1-0 setback to Morgantown at Mylan Park.
The Mohigans’ Andrew Kerzak had a no-hitter through 5 2/3 innings before allowing two singles, but finished the final inning and a third for the win. He allowed no runs on two hits with seven strikeouts and four walks in throwing 104 pitches.
The Mustangs’ Mason McManus broke up the no-hitter with a single to left before Ian Edenfield’s single put runners at first and second. Kerzak got the next batter to fly out to end the threat.
Laurel Highlands (13-1, 13-2) threatened in the seventh when Richie Mehall and Tan Erminio walked, but Kerzak was about to work his way out the jam. The Mustangs’ Chad Petrush was robbed of extra bases when Preston Fox made a diving catch for the first out in the inning.

Frazier 8, California 2 – Frazier got a strong pitching performance from Trevor Hayes and a double and a single from J.D. Celaschi on its way to an 8-2 Section 1-AA victory over visiting California on Friday.
The Commodores (4-9, 3-8) prevented the Trojans (8-6, 8-5) from clinching a playoff spot and knocked them out of contention for the section title.
California led 1-0 when Frazier struck for five runs in the fourth. Logan Kulikoski, Mason Kelly, Tim Sedok, Shane McGavitt and Celaschi all had singles in the inning.
The Commodores tacked on three more runs in the sixth to go up 8-1.
Kulikoski and Kelly each had a pair of singles, and George Smalich doubled for Frazier, which had 10 hits.
Hayes pitched 6 1/3 innings before hitting the pitch-count limit. He struck out eight and walked two.
Losing pitcher Brandon Powell struck out four and walked two in four innings.

Mapletown 6, Jefferson-Morgan 5 – Mapletown held off visiting Jefferson-Morgan, 6-5, in a Section 2-A baseball game on Friday, eliminating the Rockets from playoff contention.
The Maples jumped out to a 6-0 lead and held on as J-M scored twice in the fourth and three times in the seventh.
Winning pitcher Ethan Carter allowed five unearned runs on four hits with six walks and three strikeouts. Lane Powell relieved Carter with runners on second and third and two outs in the seventh, and recorded a game-ending strikeout to earn the save.
Dylan Rush reached base three times and totaled two hits, two runs and five stolen bases for the Maples (4-11, 3-9) who won their second in a row.
Rush’s bunt single started a four-run first for Mapletown with Brandon Donley’s two-run single being the big blow in the inning. The Maples tacked on two more runs in the second.
Zack Gamble doubled for the Rockets (5-7, 4-7). Devin Stoneking took the loss.

Waynesburg Central 9, Washington 3 – Trey Rohanna capped a seven-run seventh-inning rally with a three-run homer as Waynesburg Central blew open a close game and went on to beat host Washington, 9-3, in Section 3-AAA baseball action on Friday.
Winning pitcher Luke Robinson pitched 5 2/3 innings before hitting the pitch-count limit. He allowed one run on four hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. Kyle Shriver got the final four outs to earn the save.
Waynesburg (8-4, 7-4) led 2-1 when its seventh-inning eruption all but put the game away. Tyler Switalski, Trevor Stephenson and Rohanna had two hits apiece, and Kyle Blasco chipped in with a double and two RBIs.

Uniontown 7, Albert Gallatin 6 – Cole Waligura came all the way from first base to score on an errant throw to first base to lift Uniontown to a 7-6 non-section victory Thursday night over visiting Albert Gallatin.
Waligura walked with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning and rounded the bases on a wayward throw on Kaine Frye’s grounder.
Albert Gallatin held leads of 3-2, 5-3 and 5-4 in the first three innings. The Red Raiders tied the game in the bottom of the fifth.
The Colonials regained the lead in the top of the seventh inning on Willie Palmer’s run-scoring single.
Uniontown forced extra innings in the bottom of the inning on Brandon Bell’s RBI single. Waligura walked with two outs and Frye followed with a single to set up Bell’s run-scoring hit.
Wyatt Lepley pitched the final three innings to earn the win. He struck out two and walked two.
Bell went 4-for-5 with a double, three singles and two RBI. Silvio Urani also doubled. Trent Uphold, Nik Gibson, Brandon Swaney and Frye all had two hits for Uniontown (9-8).
Nate Bricker and Adam Simon both had three hits for Albert Gallatin. Jake Cappellini finished with two singles.

Softball
Waynesburg Central 15, Brownsville 2 – Waynesburg Central exploded for 13 runs in the first inning and went on to defeat host Brownsville, 15-2 in five innings, in Section 3-AAA softball action on Friday.
Sydney Hare had three hits, including a home run and a double, and two RBIs for the Lady Raiders (9-7, 7-3), who clinched a share of second place with Southmoreland.
Winning pitcher Jordan Sibert struck out six and walked none in throwing a four-hitter.
Waynesburg totaled nine hits, three walks and one hit batter in its huge first. Sibert had two singles and two RBIs, and Bailey Shimek also had two hits in the inning.
The Lady Raiders pounded out 13 hits overall. Rachel Elsenheimer knocked in two runs with a double and single, and Erin Fitch tripled.
Payton Hall had two hits for the Lady Falcons (3-12, 1-9). Samantha Tressler took the loss.

West Greene 17, Avella 0 – Jade Renner threw a one-hitter and drove in four runs with three hits, including a double, as West Greene thumped host Avella, 17-0 in three innings, in a Section 2-A softball game on Friday.
The victory pulled the Lady Pioneers (14-3, 10-1) into a first-place tie with idle Monessen. West Greene can clinch at least a share of its third consecutive section title with a win at Jefferson-Morgan on Tuesday.
McKenna Lampe hit an inside-the-park grand slam, and Madison Lampe contributed two hits two RBIS and three runs for West Greene. Madison Renner knocked in a pair of runs with a double and a single, Kaitlyn Rizor also doubled and singled, and Linzee Stover chipped in with two hits and two runs.
Jade Renner struck out five of the 10 batters she faced with no walks.

Hempfield 15, Albert Gallatin 3 – Kelsey Tobin homered and drove in four runs as Hempfield defeated Albert Gallatin, 15-3 in five innings, in a non-section match-up of softball powers on Friday.
Annalia Paoli accounted for all the runs for the Class 5-A Lady Colonials (10-3) with a three-run homer and added a single.
Losing pitcher Maddie Flowers was 3 for 3.

Norwin 6, Yough 5 – Norwin scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat visiting Yough in a non-section softball game on Friday.
Alexandra Brentzel homered and doubled for the Class 6-A Lady Knights (9-4). Annalise Andzelik pitched one inning and got the win despite giving up the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh.
Hannah Bach and Hannah Christner both tripled for the Class 4-A Lady Cougars (14-3). Christner had two RBIs and Bach scored twice.
With No. 1 starting pitcher Kierra Waywood out, Karlie Clark took over pitching duties for the Lady Cougars and allowed four earned runs on nine hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
