Self-reflection and the importance of each contestant and their health was the topic of discussion at the Week 11 Get Fit gathering.

Amy Tungate, co-owner of U-Town CrossFit gym, began by asking contestants to write down on a piece of paper the three things that matter the most in each one’s life.

Answers ranged from children, health, family, sobriety, God and jobs.

“I was on a retreat recently and this was part of what we did there,” Tungate said. “Just like here, no one really put themselves on the list. Why is that? We should be number one.”

As part of life, Tungate said she thinks we all just get caught up with taking care of others that we forget to take care of ourselves.

“But how can we effectively take care of our family – our husbands and our kids — if we don’t take care of ourselves first?” she asked, adding that she sets aside time on Mondays and Wednesdays to go to the gym by herself. “When I go back, I’m a better mom, wife, friend and daughter.”

Tungate encouraged the contestants to start their days with positive self talk.

“Tell yourself that you are strong, beautiful, smart, a good mom or dad, a good spouse, and then be thankful for what you have,” she said. “Be thankful for the little things — for waking up, for the person next to you, for a roof over your head.”

Self-reflection is taking a deeper look at how we act every day, rather than just reflecting on things when we see ourselves in the mirror in the morning, she said.

“What are we doing to show others in a positive light?” she questioned. “So often, we go about our day-to-day activities and continue to repeat this cycle, and before you know it, we’re in a rut. “How do you get out of that rut? By taking time to self-reflect.”

To help in getting the contestants to begin the process of self-reflection, at least in their CrossFit journey, she had them answer the following seven questions:

n What are your goals for Get Fit?

n List at least three things that help keep you on track in this fitness journey?

n List at least three things that deter your progress?

n What are your non-negotiables — things you’re just not willing to give up?

n What’s one thing you can do TODAY to hit your goals and see results?

n What’s one thing you can do EVERY DAY to hit your goals and see results?

n What’s one thing you can do EACH WEEK to hit your goals and see results?

Tungate had contestants give some of their answers specifically on what are some things that help keep you on track and also the three questions about what they could do to hit their goals.

Contestant Alexandra Griffith said her pride keeps her staying on track.

“I don’t want to be the person who doesn’t show up,” she said, adding that results also help to keep her on track towards reaching her fitness goal.

Tungate said pride is a big thing within the CrossFit community as a whole.

“The community is something that helps us stay on track because we don’t want to let them down,” she said.

Contestant Ray Newhouse Jr. said tracking his food helps keep him on track.

“If I don’t track my food, I don’t want to do anything,” he said.

Tungate agreed that tracking food is crucial in the journey.

“It really opens your eyes to what we are putting in our bodies,” she said.

Contestant Zach Hixson said just having the Get Fit challenge opportunity has kept him on track.

“This is such an awesome opportunity, and I want to take full advantage of it,” he said. “I’m not going to just let it pass and not give it my all.”

Some of the things the contestants listed as doing today to reach their goals were, “give 100 percent,” “make the right choice,” “stay on point,” and “show up.”

“Yes! Show up!” said Tungate. “You can wish it all you want, but if you don’t show up and do the work, it’s not going to happen for you.”

As for what each contestant can do each day, Tungate said they should write their targets down every day.

“We all have short-term and long-term goals,” she said. “What are we doing each day to better reach those goals?”

Finally, things they can do each week to reach their goals, include setting smaller, more attainable targets, and each Sunday reflect on the positives and negatives of the week so they can have a better upcoming week.
