Lady Falcons fall to Quaker Valley in OT, 1-0

By Bill Hughes for The 2 min read

ROSTRAVER TWP. — Brownsville had numerous golden opportunities to score against Quaker Valley in its WPIAL Class AA first round girls soccer match Saturday.

Unfortunately for the Lady Falcons, the Quakers scored a “Golden Goal,” the only goal of the match, with 6:02 to play in overtime to end Brownsville’s season.

Brownsville (13-5) had two chances to score in overtime, but it was Quaker Valley’s Cami Womeldorf who scored from 22 yards out above the outstretched arms of Brownsville keeper Alexis Carson.

“That’s tough because we left so many shots on the pitch, but it happens,” said Brownsville coach Cedar Bruchante. “Defensively, (Quaker Valley) is so compact defensively and have a super back that does a very good job of clearing the ball.

“We had ball penetration, but we did not execute or finish and they did.”

Neither team had a solid scoring chance over the first 12 minutes, but Brownsville had three chances within 45 seconds and couldn’t score on any as two direct kicks went just high of the crossbar and the third saw the Lady Falcons miss an open net.

Despite controlling play for more than half of the opening 40 minutes, Quaker Valley (9-8) didn’t record its first official shot on goal on Carson until the 9:19 mark of the first half.

Both teams struggled to put anything together late in the half, and the contest was scoreless heading into halftime.

Brownsville had eight shots on goal in the first half and Quaker Valley had two with each team having three corner kicks.

Brownsville controlled play in the second half, including outshooting the Quakers 7-1, but it could not find the back of the net and the contest went into overtime scoreless.

Despite the loss, Bruchate said he saw improvement throughout the season.

“This team did a very good job and I am very happy with how we did and will look to improve for next year,” said Bruchate. “There are always nerves when the lights are bright, but all in all, I thought we were comfortable and it took 80 minutes plus overtime to get us out of (the playoffs).”

Lily Johns, who only started playing keeper last week due to an injury, made 12 saves to earn the shutout.

Quaker Valley advances to play third-seeded Deer Lakes (16-1-1) in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
