Quarzo breezes to win in 3,200 at South HIlls Classic
Brownsville’s Gionna Quarzo covered the eight laps of the 3,200 meters at the South Hills Classic Saturday faster than she had ever done in her three years of high school track & field.
Quarzo bettered her gold medal effort in last year’s PIAA Championships by near 20 seconds when she broke the tape in the winning time of 10:29.29, a meet record.
Shenango’s Carmen Medvit finished a distant second in 11:33.91.
Several other Lady Falcons had noteworthy performances at Baldwin.
Jamilah Copeland had a pair of top-8 finishes, placing third in the 200 (27.15) and fifth in the 100 (13.11).
Ashton Reposky finished fourth in the 1,600 with a time of 5:46.89, and Emma Seto tied for third in the high jump after clearing the bar at 5 feet. Aniya Tarpley was fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 33-9¼. Elise Fields placed fifth in the shot put with a throw of 32 feet.
The Falcons’ Nicholas Seto finished third in the triple jump, covering 42-4½ with his top effort.
Yough’s Julia Milcoff placed third in the discus with a throw of 99-7. Teammate Kylie Roebuck was eighth in the javelin with a top throw of 91-6.
The Cougars’ Hunter Bakewell was fourth in the javelin with a throw of 141-9.
