By The 1 min read

Avella outscored host Mapletown 16-5 in the third period to take control and went on to a 47-41 win in a Section 2-A girls basketball game Monday night.

After an 11-11 opening period the Lady Maples (5-6, 10-9) took a 20-18 halftime lead, but the Lady Eagles (9-2, 15-4) surged to a 34-25 advantage after the third period and hung on from there.

Colleen Kinney scored a game-high 18 points for Avella and Brianna Jenkins had 11.

Abby Antill led Mapletown with 16 points and Taylor Dusenberry added 11.

The win clinched second place in the section for Avella.

The game was meaningless in the standings for the Lady Maples as whether they won or lost against the Lady Eagles, their postseason fate will be decided at Monessen on Tuesday night with the winner of that game claiming the final playoff spot out of the section.
