Arison’s buzzer-beater lifts Frazier to 53-51 win
Colton Arison’s putback with just under one second remaining in the game Wednesday night lifted visiting Frazier to a 53-51 Section 4-AAA victory at Brownsville.
Hunter Assad’s 3-pointer with about 25 seconds remaining tied the game at 51. The Commodores held for the last shot, setting up Arison’s final field goal.
The Falcons (0-11, 4-15) held the early lead with a 10-4 advantage after the first quarter and 20-17 at halftime.
The Commodores (3-8, 5-14) outscored Brownsville in the third quarter, 18-14, and then secured the win with an 18-17 fourth-quarter advantage.
Luke Santo and Justin Novak shared scoring honors for Frazier with 19 points apiece.
Phil Pace led the Falcons with a game-high 20 points. Assad added 11.
Carmichaels 75, Bentworth 31 — Carmichaels scored over 20 points in each of the first three quarters on its way to a road victory at Bentworth in Section 3-AA action.
The Mikes (3-8, 10-10) led 23-13, 45-20 and 66-29 at the quarter breaks.
Dylan Wilson led Carmichaels with a game-high 15 points. Matt Barrish and Christopher Barrish both finished with 14.
Cameron Bell scored eight points for the Bearcats (0-11, 0-20).
Freeport 37, Yough 34 — Freeport built a slight edge in the middle two quarters for a Section 1-AAAA victory at Yough.
Freeport (5-5, 11-8) broke a 10-all tie after the first quarter for a 21-16 halftime lead. The visitors held a 28-24 lead after three quarters.
Gamal Marballie led the Cougars (1-9, 7-14) with a game-high 12 points.
Vinnie Clark scored nine points for Freeport.
Girls basketball
Beth-Center 45, McGuffey 31 — Beth-Center pulled away in the second quarter on its way to a Section 2-AAA victory over visiting McGuffey.
The game was tied at 8 after the first quarter, but the Lady Bulldogs (8-5, 12-8) led 24-11 at halftime. The home team held a slight 21-20 advantage in the final 16 minutes to secure the section win.
Elizabeth Trump and Anna Sloan shared scoring honors for Beth-Center with 10 points apiece.
Abby Donnelly scored 10 points for McGuffey (5-8, 8-12).
Rifle
McGuffey 799-52x, Waynesburg Central 798-60x — The difference in the Section 1 rifle match came down to one shot with McGuffey avenging an earlier loss with a victory over visiting Waynesburg Central.
The first time the teams shot at Waynesburg Sportsmen’s Club the score was tied at 795 with the Raiders winning the tiebreaker 55x-48x.
The loss is the first of the season for the Raiders.
McGuffey counted seven 100 scores, while Waynesburg finished with six.
The Raiders’ Selena Phillips and Cameron Cernuska shared medalist honors with 100-9x. Abby Ozohonish, Shelby Burkett and Taylor Burnfield all shot 100-7x. Grace Kalsey and Colby Simkovic both scored 100-6x. Hunter Wasson (99-9x) and Shelby Burkett (99-7x) closed out the scoring.
Madisyn Francis, Eden Hertig, Gracie Stagon and Jordan Sekora all finished with 100-7x for the Highlanders. Kyle Dietrich and Julia Corrick both shot 100-6x. Adan Brookman (100-5x) and Eric Klages (99-7x) rounded out the scoring.
Girls swimming
Laurel Highlands 99, Burrell 73; Indiana 105, Laurel Highlands 73 — The Laurel Highlands girls swimming team had an eventful 24 hours in Section 4-AA action with a victory at home Wednesday and a loss Tuesday at Indiana.
Laurel Highlands won all but the first and last relays in the Burrell meet.
Maria Mrosko (200 freestyle, 2:03.65, WPIAL; 100 freestyle, 57.40, WPIAL), Gwyneth Hamilton (200 IM, 2:28.21; 100 backstroke, 1:05.25, WPIAL), Jenna Roscoe (50 freestyle, 26.03, WPIAL; 100 breaststroke, 1:17.35), Alivia Yauger (diving, 182.30, WPIAL), Miranda Yauger (100 butterfly, 1:06.18, WPIAL), and Erin George (500 freestyle, 6:23.85) all had first-place finishes.
Mrosko, Skyler Wilson, George and Roscoe hit the WPIAL standard with their winning time of 1:52.35 in the 200 freestyle relay.
Albert Gallatin’s Jael Dankle lowered her qualifying time in the 500 freestyle to 5:20.73. The junior just missed the standard of 1:02.30 in the 100 backstroke with her time of 1:03.75.
Mrosko had a pair of first-place finishes against Indiana, winning the 200 IM in 2:11.72 and 500 freestyle in 5:29.55. Both times met the WPIAL standard. Roscoe also won two races in WPIAL qualifying times, the 50 freestyle (25.82) and 100 freestyle (57.45). Hamilton, Mrosko, Wilson and Roscoe won the 200 freestyle relay in a qualifying time of 1:49.02.
Although they did not finish first, the 200 medley relay, Yauger (100 butterfly), Hamilton (100 butterfly), and Elizabeth Thomas (100 backstroke) all finished in qualifying times.
Boys swimming
Laurel Highlands 82, Burrell 18; Indiana 101, Laurel Highlands 76 — The Laurel Highlands boys swimming team had two Section 4-AA meets in 24 hours, winning at home Wednesday against Burrell and losing at Indiana on Tuesday.
Laurel Highlands won every event against the Bucs.
Jacob Johnson, Jonathon Lewis, Logan Kordich and Kole Friel won the 200 medley relay in a WPIAL qualifying time of 1:48.63. Michael Cavanaugh, Collin McManis, Dean Schiffbauer and Friel won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:45.61, and Lewis, Kordich, Joe Holp and Johnson finished first in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:57.48.
Lewis (200 freestyle, 1:56.25; 500 freestyle, 5:19.93), Friel (200 IM, 2:11.32; 100 breaststroke, 1:06.65), Johnson (50 freestyle, 22.21; 100 freestyle, 52.71), Joe Chisler (diving, 169.10), and Kordich (100 butterfly, 1:04.09; 100 backstroke, 1:05.84) all finished first against Burrell. All but Kordich’s times met the WPIAL qualifying standard.
Johnson won the 50 freestyle (22.42) and 100 backstroke (56.31) in the Indiana meet. Both finishes hit the WPIAL qualifying standard. Lewis won the 100 breaststroke in the qualifying time of 1:04.56, and Chisler won diving with a qualifying score of 162.75 points.
The Mustangs’ 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay also finished in a qualifying time, as did Lewis in the 200 freestyle and Friel in the 500 freestyle.
