Falcons win first section game, 80-54
Nick Seto and Hunter Assad combined for 53 points Friday night to lead Brownsville to an 80-54 Section 4-AAA victory over visiting Beth-Center.
Seto scored 30 points, including 13 field goals, while Assad finished with 23 points with five 3-pointers in the first half and 6-of-6 from the foul line. Assad scored 17 points in the first half.
Both point totals were career highs.
Phil Pace was also in double figures for the Falcons (1-11, 5-15) with 15 points.
JJ Green scored a game-high 32 points for the Bulldogs (2-10, 8-13) after topping 1,000 career points Thursday night.
Frazier 61, Southmoreland 58, OT — Justin Novak led the way with a double-double as visiting Frazier rallied for an overtime victory in Section 4-AAA action at Southmoreland.
Novak finished with a game-high 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Commodores (4-8, 6-14).
The Scotties (7-5, 12-9) led 20-5 after the first quarter and 33-24 at halftime, but Frazier closed the gap to 43-39 at the end of the quarter.
The visitors held a 14-10 advantage in the fourth quarter and then outscored Southmoreland 8-5 in overtime to secure the win.
Elijah Santoro finished with 20 points for the Commodores. Luke Santo was also in double figures with 15.
Cade Richter led the playoff-bound Scotties with 19 points. Riley Comforti scored 15 and Ronnie Robinson finished with 15.
Uniontown 72, Greensburg Salem 59 — The Uniontown boys closed out the non-section game with a 17-11 fourth quarter to secure a victory at Greensburg Salem.
The Red Raiders improve to 17-3 overall and close the regular season Monday night when they host Laurel Highlands.
The Golden Lions go to 8-13 overall.
Greensburg Salem led 18-16 after the first quarter, but the Red Raiders pulled into a 37-28 lead at halftime. The Golden Lions pushed back with a 20-18 third quarter before the visitors put the game away in the final eight minutes.
Isaiah Melvin led Uniontown with 21 points. Billy DeShields scored 13 and Jahmere Richardson added 10.
Greensburg Salem’s Ryan Thomas finished with a game-high 25 points. Zack Oberdorf and Dante Parsons both scored 10.
California 77, Bentworth 64 — California scored 20 or more points in each of the first three quarters as the visiting Trojans cruised to a Section 2-AA victory at Bentworth.
The Trojans (7-5, 12-8) led 20-9 after the first quarter and 44-22 at halftime. The visitors extended the advantage to 66-42 at the end of the third quarter.
Malik Ramsey led California with 17 points. Cochise Ryan and Nate Zemany 14 scored 14 apiece. Nate O’Savage finished with 12 and Austin Grillo added 10.
Shawn Dziak scored a game-high 20 points for the Bearcats (0-12, 0-21). Cameron Bell finished with 19 and Jacob Burke added 13.
The Trojans close out the regular season Monday night with a non-section game at home against Brownsville.
Peters Twp. 76, Connellsville 52 — The Falcons fell behind early and were unable to recover for a non-section loss at Peters Twp.
The Indians (13-7) led 28-14 after the first quarter and extended their advantage to 52-21 at halftime.
The Falcons (8-14) outscored the home team in the second half, 31-24.
Jalen Rogers led Connellsville with 25 points.
Colin Cote scored a game-high 30 points, including eight 3-pointers, for the Indians. Sam Petrarca finished with 14 and Dax Ploskina added 16.
The home squad hit 11 3-pointers in the first half and 13 in the game.
Connellsville closes the regular season Monday with a boy-girl doubleheader at home against Albert Gallatin.
Canon-McMillan 59, Ringgold 47 — Canon-McMillan built a 41-15 halftime lead and then the Big Macs cruised in the final 16 minutes for a non-section road victory at Ringgold.
The Rams (13-7) held a 32-28 advantage in the second half.
Jaden Taylor led Ringgold with 15 points. Chris Peccon added 13.
Tommy Samosky scored a game-high 17 points for Canon-McMillan. Luke Palma finished with 12.
Mount Pleasant 73, Geibel Catholic 58 — The Geibel Catholic boys closed the regular season with a non-section loss to visiting Mount Pleasant.
The Vikings (5-16) led 27-15 after the first quarter, but the Gators closed the gap to 40-33 at halftime. The visitors salted the victory away with a 32-25 advantage in the second half.
Mount Pleasant’s Jacob Johnson shared game-scoring honors with 24 points. Luke Brander added 13.
Enzo Fetsko scored 24 points for Geibel, with Cole Kendall finishing with 12 and Ryan Anderson adding 11.
The Gators (11-11) next play in the WPIAL Class A playoffs.
South Park 58, Waynesburg Central 57 — Lucas Garber poured in a game-high 37 points, but Waynesburg Central came up one point short in a Section 3-AAAA loss at South Park.
Garber also pulled down 14 rebounds to finish with a double-double.
The Raiders (2-8, 9-13) led 42-41 through three quarters and 30-27 at halftime.
Santino Tutich led the Eagles (6-4, 9-11) with 19 points. Hunter Lindsay added 16.
Monessen 82, Mapletown 23 — Monessen scored all the points it needed in the first quarter in a Section 2-A victory at Mapletown.
The Greyhounds win the section title with a 12-0 record, improving to 14-7 overall. The Maples finish 1-11 in the section and 1-21 overall.
Monessen led 30-6 after the first quarter, and extended its lead to 55-13 at halftime. The Greyhounds outscored Mapletown in the second half, 27-10.
Darnel Howell scored a game-high 17 points for Monessen. Devin Whitlock (15), Elijahwa Payne (13), and Marquell Smith (10) also scored in double figures.
Mapletown was led by Lance Stevenson’s seven points.
Girls basketball
Preston (W.Va.) 72, Laurel Highlands 64 — Laurel Highlands junior Taylor Smith scored 21 points to give her 999 for her career, but the Fillies fell at Preston (W.Va.) in a non-section game.
Laurel Highlands (4-17) led 23-21 after the first period but the Lady Knights (11-8) surged to a 41-34 halftime lead. The Fillies pulled within 57-53 after three periods but Preston held on for the win.
LH hosts Greensburg Salem in a non-section game Monday night where Smith will need just one point to hit the 1,000 milestone.
Erica Myers 18 led Preston with 18 points. Michelle Thomas scored 17 and Carsynn Sines added 13.
Mapletown 55, Hundred (W.Va.) 20 — Taylor Dusenberry outscored Hundred (W.Va.) by herself to lead the Lady Maples to a non-section victory at home.
Dusenberry scored 26 points for the Lady Maples, who improve to 12-9 overall.
Mapletown led 13-7, 25-11 and 45-13 at the quarter breaks.
Rachel Sneddar led Hundred with 10 points.
Elizabeth Forward 45, Uniontown 32 — Elizabeth Forward controlled the second and fourth quarters for a non-section victory at Uniontown.
The playoff-bound Lady Warriors outscored Uniontown 33-13 in the two quarters to secure the road win.
The Lady Raiders (1-20) held a 19-12 advantage in the other quarters.
Uniontown’s Mya Murray led all scorers with 17 points.
Elizabeth Forward’s Anna Resnik hit four 3-pointers to finish with 16 points. Julia Jenkins added 12.
Carmichaels 40, Bentworth 28 — Carmichaels took control in the third period on its way to a Section 3-AA win over visiting Bentworth in the season finale for both teams.
The Lady Mikes (2-10, 6-16) led 11-6 after the first period and 24-20 at halftime before using a 13-2 advantage in the third to go up 37-22 and cruised home from there.
Carmichaels seniors Gina Ranieri, Shelbee McCann and Emily Menhart were honored after the game. Ranieri led the Lady Mikes with 10 points, while McCann and Emma Hyatt scored five points apiece.
Jocelyn Timlin led the Lady Bearcats (0-12, 1-20) with nine points and Caroline Rice added seven points.
Bethel Park 46, Connellsville 29 — The Connellsville girls lost their Section 2-AAAAAA final, dropping a decision to visiting Bethel Park.
Zoe Youdell led the Lady Falcons (1-13, 5-16) with a game-high 17 points.
Julianna Carbone topped the Lady Black Hawks (12-2, 19-2) with 12 points. Maria Cerro and Maddie Dziezgowski added 10 points apiece.
Connellsville closes the season at home Monday with a boy-girl doubleheader against Albert Gallatin.
College softball
Eckerd (Fla.) 5, California (Pa.) 0; Molloy (N.Y.) 4, California (Pa.) 2 — The California University of Pa. softball team had a rough start to the season, dropping both ends of a doubleheader in the NFCA Leadoff Classic held in Clearwater, Fla.
The Vulcans lost to Eckerd (Fla.) in the first game, 5-0, and Molloy (N.Y.) in the nightcap, 4-2.
California had more errors (6) than runs (2) in the two games.
Eckerd (2-3) scored two runs in its first at-bat without the benefit of a hit. The runs scored on an error and wild pitch.
Winning pitcher Nikole Van Gennep then powered the visiting team to a 5-0 lead with a three-run blast in the top of the third inning.
Van Gennep (2-1) held the Vulcans to five hits, two singles by Brooke Wilson and one hit each by Mount Pleasant graduate Ava Gnibus, Paige Wilson and Sierra Besser-Paul. She struck out nine and didn’t walk a batter in the complete-game victory.
Emilee Downing (0-1) took the loss, allowing all five runs (four earned) on three hits in 3.2 innings pitched. She walked three and struck out eight.
Molloy (1-1) scored just one earned run in its victory over the Vulcans.
Losing pitcher Taylor Robblee accounted for California’s runs with a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Brooke Wilson had half of the Vulcans’ hits with three singles. Abby Sachse and Alexa Pastor had the other singles for California.
Robblee (0-1) pitched five innings, allowing five hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
Jenna Turato (1-0) nearly went the distance, giving up six hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Tonianna Larson picked up the final out on a strikeout.
Men’s basketball
Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus 96, Penn State Schuylkill 72 — The Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus men built a big halftime lead and then the Roaring Lions cruised to a PSUAC victory over Penn State Schuylkill.
The Roaring Lions improve to 9-8 in the PSUAC and 9-14 overall.
London Hoxie led five Penn State Fayette players in double figures with a game-high 21 points, including four 3-pointers. Marvin Sidon (12), Tavian Mozie (15), Dominic Boring (14), and Craig Weaver (10) also finished in double digits.
Devin King led Schuylkill (6-10, 8-14) with 17 points.
Women’s basketball
Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus 79, Penn State Schuylkill 33 — The Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus women raced out to a 30-9 lead after the first quarter for an easy PSUAC victory over visiting Penn State Schuylkill.
Carissa Cyphert led the Lady Roaring Lions (6-7, 10-13) with 14 points, including 4-for-4 from 3-point range. Kaitlyn Riley (12), Dae-lin Burnsworth (11), and Lyndsey Huhn (10) also scored in double figures.
Penn State Fayette grabbed 61 rebounds, led by Taylor Costa’s game-high 20. Shelbie Brown pulled down 11.
Morgan Edge led Schuylkill (0-14, 0-20) with 14 points.
