Brownsville begins defense of WPIAL title with win at West Mifflin
Brownsville rallied from an early 5-1 deficit to open defense of its 2018 WPIAL championship with a 12-7 non-section victory at West Mifflin on Tuesday.
Nick Keeney had four hits, including a run-scoring double in a seven-run fourth inning that put the Falcons in front to stay, and knocked in four runs.
Preston Frost stroked three hits, Mike Petrok delivered two hits and two RBIs, Austin Lincoski contributed a pair of singles, two runs and an RBI, and Derek Timko had two hits and drove in one run in a 13-hit Brownsville attack.
Cameron Brosky earned the win, allowing one run on three hits in 3 2/3 innings of work in relief of starter Nick Climes. Brosky struck out two and walked two. Zachary Kutek allowed one run over the final three innings to earn the save.
The Titans countered a Brownsville run in the top of the first with five in the bottom of the frame. Coach Skooter Roebuck’s Falcons came right back with three runs in the second to pull within one then surged to an 11-5 lead with seven runs in the fourth.
High school softball
Belle Vernon 5, Ringgold 3 — Sophie Godzak hit a two-run homer and pitched Belle Vernon to a Section 2-AAAA victory on Thursday at Ringgold.
The Lady Leopards (1-0, 1-2) scored three runs in the top of the eighth to break a 2-2 tie before the Lady Rams (0-1, 0-1) added a run in the bottom of the frame.
Godzak was the winning pitcher in allowing three earned runs on eight hits in eight innings. She had eight strikeouts and walked two. Teammate Jordan French also hit a home run, and had two singles.
Belle Vernon’s Ashley Joll had three singles and an RBI. The Lady Leopards’ Lindsay Steeber added an RBI.
Ringgold took a 2-0 lead with one run apiece in the first and second innings. Belle Vernon scored one in the third and one in the fourth to tie the game before breaking through in the eighth.
The Lady Rams’ Jillian Scherer took the loss, but had eight strikeouts and two walks. Teammate Ashlee Selembo had two singles.
The Lady Leopards host West Mifflin in section play today at 4 p.m.
Yough 14, Derry Area 0 — Yough scored three runs in the first inning and that is all the offense Kierra Waywood need in the Lady Cougars’ non-section victory over Derry Area at Yough.
Waywood pitched a two-hit shutout in five innings as the game was called due to the mercy rule. She had 10 strikeouts and no walks.
Yough (2-1) scored five more runs in the second for an 8-0 lead, and put the game out of reach with six in the fourth. The Lady Cougars’ Nevaeh Chopp, Emma Augustine, Kaylyn Odelli and Hannah Christner each had a double. Teammate Corrin Parquette tripled. Christner had three hits and two RBIs.
Yough’s Savannah Manns and Sammie McGhee had two base hits. McGhee and Prquette had two RBIs apiece.
Penn-Trafford 3, Connellsville 1 — Connellsville opened up the scoring in the top of the first inning, but Penn-Trafford added two in the bottom of the frame and held on for a victory over the Lady Falcons in Section 1-AAAAA play at Penn-Trafford.
The Lady Falcons’ Garrity Bungard had two triples, and teammate Mia Burd had a double and triple. Burd took the pitching loss, but only allowed three runs over seven innings.
The Lady Warriors added an insurance run in the sixth to take the section opener. Penn-Trafford’s Morgan Hilty allowed one run over seven in earning the pitching victory.
Girls track
Belle Vernon 95, Southmoreland 65 — The Lady Leopards went on the road Tuesday and returned home with a non-section victory.
Sydney Baciak had quite a day with first-place finishes in the 100 high hurdles (16.9), long jump (15-11), high jump (5-2), and triple jump (31-2).
Grace Henderson (1,600, 6:41; 3,200, 12:28; 300 intermediate hurdles, 54.5) won three events, while Hannah Seitzinger (200, 27.8; 400, 1:03) won two events.
Kaitlyn Keegan won the 800 in 2:55.
Katie Hrycko, Morgan Einodshofer, Madison Schmeltz and Kayla Robare won the 400 relay in 1:00.8, and Einodshofer, Seitzinger, Mara Shrader and Kiersten Brooks finished first in the 3,200 relay in 11:21.
Lori Kuhns had the best throw in the javelin (94-8), as did Ezra Johnson in the discus (97-4).
Albert Gallatin 81, Yough 58 — Emily Saunders won two individual events and took part in two winning relays to help Albert Gallatin defeat host Yough in a Section 2-AAA meet on Tuesday.
Saunders finished first in the 100 high hurdles (19.22) and the 300 hurdles (53.06). She also combined with Rachel Dodson, Riley Steeber and Ashtyn Guesman to win the 400 relay (57.75), and teamed up with Maddi Vinch, Jackie Kirby and Abby King to win the 1,600 relay (5:11).
Dodson took first in the 100 (14.75) and the 200 (30.91) and Kaylynn Frum won the long jump (15-11) and the triple jump (32-4). Other individual winners for the Lady Colonials were Kirby in the 400 (1:13.5), King in the high jump (4-0) and Odessa Hillard in the javelin (110-1).
Boys track
Yough 77, Albert Gallatin 53 — Yough defeated visiting Albert Gallatin in a Section 2-AAA meet on Tuesday.
Individual winners for the Colonials were Antonio Efford in the 100 (12.12), Mark Flecker in the 400 (59.73), David Wingrove in the 800 (2:19), Gary Breakiron in the 1,600 (5:12), Nathan Guzik in the 3,200 (10:46) and Nate Sutton in the 300 hurdles (45:44).
AG also won the 400 relay with Andrew Larkin, Tyler Frezzell, Brennin Grogan and Efford (47.65) and the 3,200 relay with Breakiron, Chris Piwowar, Bailey Holbert and Wingrove (9:31).
