Sickles, Bliss homer as Fillies down Kiski, 6-3

Mercedes Sickles and Emma Bliss each homered to spark Laurel Highlands to a 6-3 win over visiting Kiski Area in Section 1-AAAAA softball action on Thursday.

Winning pitcher Sydney Petrowski fired a three-hitter with five walks and five strikeouts.

The Lady Cavaliers led 2-1 in the bottom of the third when Sickles and Bliss both hit two-run homers to put the Fillies ahead 5-2. Both teams tacked on a run in the six inning to set the final score.

Allison Lowery and Kaia Zungri both went 3 for 4 with a double for LH, which had 11 hits.

Kira Brown and Kassandra Cessna each hit a solo homer for Kiski (0-2, 0-2). Megan Andrea was the losing pitcher.

Carmichaels 17, Beth-Center 2 — Gina Ranieri was 4 for 4 with a double and three RBIs as Carmichaels rolled over host Beth-Center in a five-inning Section 3-AA game.

The Lady Mikes (1-0, 1-0) scored three runs in both the first and fourth innings before exploding for 11 in the fifth to invoke the mercy rule.

Winning pitcher Kylie Sinn tossed a three-hitter with no earned runs. She struck out nine and walked one, and contributed a triple, double, three runs and two RBIs on offense.

Shelbee McCann and Madison Ellsworth each had two hits and three RBIs for Carmichaels, Grace Brown doubled and knocked in two runs, Emily Conklin doubled and Emily Menhart had two RBIs.

Jen Zelenick and Laura Esmond each had a single and an RBI for the Lady Bulldogs (0-1, 0-1).

Penn-Trafford 5, Albert Gallatin 4 — Emma Armstrong hit a grand slam in the top of the seventh inning to lift Penn-Trafford over host Albert Gallatin, 5-4, in a Section 1-AAAAA softball clash on Thursday.

The Lady Colonials (1-1, 1-2) scored once in the first and once in the third to take a 2-0 lead which held through the first six innings before Armstrong’s big blast capped a five-run seventh to put the Lady Warriors ahead 5-2.

Albert Gallatin’s rally in the bottom of the inning fell just short. Harlie Vance and Maddie Hershberger delivered run-scoring singles to make it 5-4 and AG had runners on second and third with two outs when P-T pitcher Mia Smith got a game-ending fly out.

Vance had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs for the Lady Colonials, and Maddie Flowers also had two hits.

Smith pitched three inning of relief to earn the win, while Flowers also tossed three innings in taking the loss.

South Park 13, Brownsville 3 – Grace Alditz homered and doubled as South Park beat host Brownsville in five innings, in a Section 3-AAA softball game.

Aubri Hogsett doubled and tripled for the Lady Falcons (0-1, 2-2) and Payton Hall doubled and singled.

Winning pitcher Julie Shivavski struck out five and walked none in throwing a five-hitter, and also doubled for the Lady Eagles (1-0, 4-1). Jess Dean doubled twice.

Samantha Tressler took the loss.

West Mifflin 11, Belle Vernon 5 — West Mifflin jumped out to an 8-0 lead and went on to defeat host Belle Vernon in a Section 2-AAAA softball game.

Emma Mackulin had three hits, including a triple, Casey Bornak and Lauren Yuhas both doubled and singled, and Alyssa Schmidt also tripled for the Lady Titans (2-0, 4-0). Winning pitcher Emily Buchleitner gave up four earned runs on nine hits in four innings.

Abby Fabin had two hits and an RBI for the Lady Leopards (1-1, 1-3). Natalie French also had two hits and Jordan French smacked a triple. Losing pitcher Sophie Godzak had two RBIs and a single, and Ally Pacak and Ashley Joll both had a hit and an RBI.

Keystone Oaks 11, Southmoreland 1 — Maria Fratangelo went 3 for 3 with a home run as Keystone Oaks blanked visiting Southmoreland in six innings in the Section 3-AAA softball opener for both teams.

Jess Metheny and Tyson Martin both doubled for the defending WPIAL champion Lady Scotties (0-1, 0-1). Metheny took the loss, allowing two earned runs with three strikeouts and one walk in five innings.

Sydney Stahl was 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs for the Lady Eagles (1-0, 1-0). Jessica Laporte was 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs. Winning pitcher Bri Butler allowed six hits in six innings.

Norwin 3, Yough 2 — Victoria Russell hit a two-run homer as Norwin held off host Yough for a non-section win.

Winning pitcher Sydney Lokay blanked the Lady Cougars (2-2) through six innings on two hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts. Elizabeth Waszkiewic allowed two unearned runs on one hit in the seventh to earn the save for the Lady Knights (2-1).

Losing pitcher Kierra Waywood surrendered just one earned run on five hits with no walks and four strikeouts in going the distance, and had two of Yough’s three hits with one run scored. The Lady Cougars’ only other hit was a single by Savannah Manns.

Lokay doubled and Alexandra Dillner had two hits and an RBI for Norwin.

Franklin Regional 7, Connellsville 6 – Franklin Regional took advantage of six Connellsville errors in a Section 1-AAAAA win over the host Lady Falcons.

Winning pitcher Angalee Beall homered and singled for the Lady Panthers (2-0, 3-2) and Kate Alexander had two hits and two RBIs.

Mia Burd allowed five hits and three walks with six strikeouts in taking the loss, and contributed two hits with the bat. Sadie Miller also had two hits for the Lady Falcons (0-2, 1-2). Kara May and Abby King each had a double and an RBI.

Edgewood 4, West Greene 3 — West Greene out-hit Edgewood (Ohio), 14-6, but suffered a 4-3 loss in its season opener at The Ripken Experience at Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Thursday.

The Lady Pioneers held a 3-1 when the Lady Cougars struck for three runs in the sixth to grab the lead, and held on from there.

Jade Renner allowed three earned runs on six hits with one walk and eight strikeouts in taking the loss. Brianna Amos went 4 for 4 with two RBIs for West Greene. McKenna Lampe was 3 for 4 with two steals, Madison Lampe was 2 for 4 with a triple and an RBI, and Kaitlyn Rizor doubled and scored two runs.

Winning pitcher Kaitlyn Ezzone struck out three and walked one.

In other scores, Chartiers-Houston shut out visiting Charleroi, 10-0, and Ringgold beat Carrick, 21-1.

High school baseball

Waynesburg Central 10, California 1 — Luke Robinson and Jesse Johnson each had two hits and two RBIs as Waynesburg Central defeated host California in non-section baseball action.

Winning pitcher Kyle Shriver allowed two runs on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.

The Raiders (1-1) led 3-1 after three innings and 5-2 after six before erupting for five runs in the top of the seventh to put the game away.

Johnson doubled twice and Robinson also doubled. Kyle Blasco contributed two hits and two runs and Justin Goodman also had two hits for Waynesburg. Trevor Stephenson totaled two runs, a stolen base and one hit.

Jacob Swartz and Malik Ramsey drove in the Trojans’ two runs. Nate Zemany took the loss.

Frazier 9, Monessen 8 — Frazier rallied from an early 4-0 deficit then held off host Monessen in the final inning to secure a non-section win.

Marcus Tansmore had two hits and an RBI for the Greyhounds (0-1), who also got a three-run double from Zach Evans in the first inning, and a triple from Darnel Howell.

Brayden Baccino’s two-run single capped a six-run second to put the Commodores in front to stay, and Josh Skotnick tripled. Chase Hazelbaker came on in relief in the first inning for Frazier and pitched through the sixth to earn the win.

Monessen combined two walks and a pair of hit batsman to score a run in the bottom of the seventh, but Dom Dorcon regrouped and got a game-ending strikeout to earn the save.

Vincenzo Rhome took the loss.

Yough 9, Albert Gallatin 2 — Jarret Bach pitched into the seventh inning and rang up 16 strikeouts to help lead Yough over visiting Albert Gallatin in a non-section game.

Vinny Martin drove in two runs with a single and a double for the Cougars (1-1) and Dom Koch also had two RBIs with a double. Bach allowed two runs and walked three.

Kenny Lewis doubled for the Colonials (1-1). Jace Cappellini took the loss in relief.

AG scored twice in the third to take a 2-1 lead but Yough surged in front with four runs in the fourth and added four more in the sixth.

Southmoreland 22, Geibel Catholic 0 – Austin McBeth doubled and drove in four runs as Southmoreland defeated visiting Geibel Catholic in a three-inning non-section game.

Travis Sipple, Mason Basinger and Michael Klatt had two RBIs apiece for the Scotties (2-0), who have already matched last season’s win total.

Winning pitcher Anthony Govern pitched two innings with four strikeouts and Klatt went one with two strikeouts in an abbreviated combined no-hitter.

Highlands 3, Belle Vernon 0 – Noah Gillette and Chase Godfreys combined on a two-hit shutout as host Highlands blanked Belle Vernon in a non-section game.

In other scores, Mount Pleasant beat visiting McGuffey, 5-3, West Greene defeated visiting Bentworth, 7-1, and Trinity blanked visiting Ringgold, 1-0, in non-section games.

Boys track

Waynesburg Central 105, Charleroi 28 — The Raiders secured a comfortable 105-28 victory Thursday afternoon in Section 6-AA track & field action at Charleroi.

Caleb Shriver finished first in four events: 100 (11.71), 200 (24.22), long jump (18-9), and triple jump (38-11) for the Raiders.

Daniel Layton won the 110 high hurdles (15.82) and 300 intermediate hurdles (45.36). Kullen Thorne (1,600, 5:32), Anthony Kutcher (800, 2:20), Gabe McConville (3,200, 11:36), and Scott Benco (javelin, 169-4), Troy McIe (high jump, 6-0), and Joshua Galbraith (shot put, 40-3) also finished first for Waynesburg Central.

The Raiders also won the 3,200 and 1,600 relays.

Warren Hammond (discus, 130-4) and Jonah Ruschak (400, 54.2) finished first for the Cougars.

Frazier 79, Mount Pleasant 70 — The Frazier boys opened the Section 8-AA track & field meet schedule Thursday with a pair of wins at Mount Pleasant.

The Commodores also defeated Serra Catholic. The Vikings downed the Eagles, 103-29.

Mount Pleasant won the first two relays, but Frazier came through in the 1,600 relay for the points needed for the victory.

Frazier’s Ryan Balentine (110 high hurdles, 17.2; 300 intermediate hurdles, 44.9; 200, 24.2), Julian Muccioli (100, 11.7; long jump, 21-1; triple jump, 42-10), Vincenzo Muccioli (400, 58.1), and Kenny Fine (high jump, 5-10) secured first-place finishes against Mount Pleasant.

Damian George (1,600, 5:06; 800), Jeff Fleck (3,200, 11:54), Zakari Luccullo (discus, 115-3; javelin, 140-5), Kenny Biller (shot put, 39-5), and Logan Rega (pole vault, 6-0) all had first-place finishes for the Vikings against Frazier.

Girls track

Waynesburg Central 111, Charleroi 22 — The Lady Raiders were dominating on the track and in the field Thursday afternoon for a 111-22 Section 6-AA win at Charleroi.

Taylor Shriver had a solid performance for the Lady Raiders with first-place finishes in the 100 high hurdles (18.41) and 200 (28.09). Madison Brooks swept the throwing events, winning the javelin (78-8), shot put (32-4), and discus (115-2).

Kaitlyn Pester won three events, finishing first in the 1,600 (6:29.88), 800 (3:04.1), and 3,200 (14:52), as did Juliana Fowler in the 100 (13.53), long jump (15-1½), and triple jump (30-9).

Emma Mankey (300 intermediate hurdles, 58.35) and Bree Echagaray (high jump, 4-6) also finished first for the Lady Raiders.

Waynesburg won the 400 and 1,600 relays, as well.

Bella Skobel (400, 1:07) had Charleroi’s lone first-place finish.

Mount Pleasant 84, Frazier 60 — The Mount Pleasant girls opened Section 8-AA action at home Thursday with a pair of victories.

The Lady Vikings also defeated Serra Catholic, 93½-20½.

Riley Czekaj (1,600, 7:00; 800, 2:43), Kayla Moninger (400, 1:03.2), Hannah Gesinski (200, 30.5), 3200 relay (11:45), 1,600 relay, Kennedi Rogers (discus, 88-9), Mya Klejka (javelin, 98-4), Chloe Jaworski (shot put, 30-8), Karsen Kapelewski (triple jump, 30-2; pole vault, 5-0), and Emily Brown (high jump, 4-0) all finished first for the Lady Vikings against Frazier.

The Lady Commdores received first-place finishes from Kaelyn Shaporka (100 high hurdles, 19.8; 300 intermediate hurdles, 57.6; long jump, 12-8), 400 relay (59.2), and Isabella Kudyba (3,200, 15:17) in the meet against Mount Pleasant.
