Cunningham’s OT goal leads Lady Falcons over Allderdice, 3-2
Callie Cunningham scored her second goal in the first overtime to lead Connellsville to a 3-2 Section 3-AAAA victory over Allderdice on Wednesday at Allderdice.
Cunningham recorded an unassisted tally with 2:59 remaining in the first overtime. Cunningham opened the scoring with 31:18 left in the first half after taking a pass from Mary Kate Lape.
The Lady Falcons (7-3, 10-3) took a 1-0 lead into overtime before Lape set up Cayde Koballa for a 2-0 advantage at 36:48 of the second half.
The Lady Dragons’ Payton Feldman cut the deficit to 2-1 on a penalty kick 1:45 later. Teammate Emma Brown tied the match on an unassisted tally with 9:51 left to send the match into overtime.
Connellsville had 15 shots on goal and Allderdice five. The Lady Falcons’ Allison Zavatchan made three saves and Allderdice’s Jillian Blake stopped 12 shots.
Connellsville has already clinched a playoff spot, but it looks to move up in the standings and a lower seed in the postseason when it travels to Penn-Trafford (7-1, 9-3) on Monday at Penn-Trafford. The kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Bentworth 3, McGuffey 0 — Jasmine Manning had a clean sheet in Bentworth’s victory at McGuffey in Section 2-A play.
The playoff-bound Lady Bearcats, who had already clinched the postseason for the 10th straight year, have assured themselves of a top-three spot in the WPIAL Class A playoffs.
Bentworth (8-0, 12-1) had a 1-0 lead at halftime after a goal by Jocelyn Timlin.
Tessa Charpentier set up Reagan Schreiber to for a 2-0 advantage and Caroline Rice capped off the scoring for the Lady Bearcats.
Taylor Leonetti’s play at outside back helped to preserve Manning’s shutout.
Bentworth hosts Monessen (2-7, 3-10) on Saturday in section action at 10 a.m.
Waynesburg Central 6, Southmoreland 0 — Ashlyn Basinger and Rhea Kijowski scored two goals apiece in Waynesburg Central’s triumph over Southmoreland in Section 3-AA play at Waynesburg Central High School.
Basinger’s first goal came at 32:54 of the first half in the only goal that Lady Raiders keeper McKenzie Booth would need. Jillian Kijowski assisted on Basinger’s tally.
Basinger set up Rhea Kijowski at 8:13 of the first, and scored her second with 4:32 remaining in the first half. Rhea Kijowski assisted on Basinger’s second tally.
Kaley Pell set up Jillian Kijowski 1:22 later for a 4-0 lead heading into the second half.
Basinger set up Rhea Kijowski at 25:44 of the second half and Kylie Sinn closed the scoring at 24:03. Callie Gibson assisted on Sinn’s goal.
Waynesburg Central (4-4, 6-5) had 18 shots on goal and Booth made nine saves for the clean sheet.
The Lady Raiders are at South Park (6-1-1, 8-3-1) on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The Lady Scotties (2-7, 3-7) host the Lady Eagles on Monday at 7:30 p.m. Both matches are in Section 3-AA.
Belle Vernon 14, Albert Gallatin 0 — Belle Vernon had three players with hat tricks in a victory over Albert Gallatin in Section 2-AAA play at James Weir Stadium.
The Lady Leopards’ Jillian Butchki had a match-high four goals, and teammates Morgan Einodshofer and Farrah Reader had three apiece. Einodshofer had three assists.
Autumn Forte, Lauren Metz and Chloe Morgan also scored for Belle Vernon (9-0, 10-2).
The Lady Leopards’ Grace Henderson and Victoria Rodriguez combined for the shutout with six saves total.
Belle Vernon is at Greensburg Salem (5-4, 5-6) on Monday in section action at 7:30 p.m.
The Lady Colonials (0-8, 1-11) hosts the Lady Golden Lions on Saturday at 10 a.m.
Girls volleyball
Laurel Highlands 3, Frazier 2 — For the second match this season, Frazier and Laurel Highlands had a five-set thriller, and the Fillies came out on top for a non-section victory.
Laurel Highlands (8-1, 11-2) one the fifth set, 15-8, for the victory. LH earned a 25-15 triumph in the first set before the Lady Commodores (8-0, 10-2) edged the visitors, 25-23, in the second set.
Laurel Highlands won the third set, 25-18, before Frazier tied the match with a 25-22 victory in the fourth set.
The Fillies’ Maddie Wheeler led the match in assists with 36 and digs with 28. She also had two kills. Teammate Bella Buwawa had a match-high in kills with 12 and added 16 digs. LH’s Olivia Glusica had 11 digs.
The Lady Commodores’ Logan Hartman had 10 assists and eight kills, and teammate Sierra Twigg added eight kills and three blocks.
Frazier’s Alexis Lovis had 15 assists and teammate Mackenzie Kelly led her team in digs with 27. Jordin Brundege had 12 digs for the home team.
The Lady Commodores’ Jensyn Hartman led her team in service points with 10 and Kaelyn Shaporka added eight kills.
Keystone Oaks 3, Ringgold 1 — Ringgold battled Keystone Oaks tough in the first two sets, but the Lady Golden Eagles were able to earn a non-section victory at Ringgold High School.
Keystone Oaks won the first set, 25-17, before the Lady Rams (0-9, 1-11) won the second, 25-13.
The visitors won the third set, 25-12, and the fourth, 25-15.
Ringgold’s Alexis Sage led the defense with 29 digs. Teammate Kaiden Bubash had 15 assists and Alyssa Pagliei added eight kills. Michelle Stoffel had five kills for the home team and Haley Resosky added four aces.
West Greene 2, Cameron (W.Va.) 0; West Greene 2, Hundred (W.Va.) 0 — West Greene swept Cameron and Hundred, West Virginia, in a tri-match at Hundred.
The Lady Pioneers won by scores of 2-0 in both matches.
West Greene’s Elizabeth Brudnock had eight aces and seven kills against Cameron and teammate Paige Taylor added six kills.
The Lady Pioneers’ Kylie Simms had seven assists against Cameron. Olivia Kiger and Jersey Wise had four digs apiece in the match against Cameron.
West Greene’s Sophia Plock had five kills and three aces against Hundred. The Lady Pioneers’ Emily Cooke and Karlee Payton added three digs apiece and BreAnn Jackson had two assists.
West Greene improved to 7-7 overall.
Girls tennis
Ringgold 4, Vincentian Academy 1 — Playoff-bound Ringgold rallied for a victory over Vincentian Academy in Section 4-AA girls tennis action at Ringgold.
The Lady Royals’ Ang Dalton got her team started off strong in a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Rebecca McIntosh at No. 1 singles.
The Lady Rams’ Julia Corey lost the first set, 6-3, to Olivia Roble, but came back for a 6-0 win in the second set and a 6-1 triumph in the third set to clinch the match. Teammate Alexis Davis downed Julia Kampas, 6-3, 6-2, heading into doubles action.
The team of Abbey Powell and Allyson Breinig topped Claire Nettlepon and Anina Hauser, 6-2, 6-2, to clinch the match for Ringgold (6-3, 7-6). The Lady Rams’ Courtney Berdar and Hannah Brooks topped Mia White and Bella Jones, 6-0, 6-2.
