IUP rallies past Cal U, 17-6
California University of Pennsylvania held a three-point lead until midway through the third quarter, but IUP rallied for a 17-6 victory in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.
The Vulcans (1-1, 3-2) took a 3-0 lead at 3:23 of the first quarter on a 28-yard field goal by Keaton Hier to cap a 14-play, 58-yard drive that took 7:08.
The Crimson Hawks (1-0, 5-0) took a 7-3 advantage at 6:04 of the third quarter when Duane Brown pulled in a 60-yard reception from Quinton Maxwell and Dillon Sarka made the first of two PATs.
Hier pulled Cal U within one on a 37-yard field goal at 14:55 of the fourth before Sarka nailed a 23 yarder for a 10-6 lead at 11:43 of the fourth.
Maxwell and Brown hooked up again for a touchdown on a 34-yard pass at 3:56 of the fourth to cap a 10-play, 80-yard drive that took 5:35 and increased IUP’s advantage to 17-6.
Maxwell was 15 of 31 for 313 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Brown caught four passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns. Teammate Jojo Gause pulled in six receptions for 129 yards.
Vulcans defensive back and Laurel Highlands graduate Jimmy Pierce made two tackles (1 solo).
