Todd nets hat trick as Rams win PIHL opener, 5-2
Ringgold pulled away with three goals in the second period Monday night as the Rams opened PIHL Varsity B South Division play with a 5-2 victory over visiting Morgantown.
Ethan Saylor tied the game late in the first period on assists by Justin Day and Nathan Todd.
Todd was the recipient of a pass from Saylor to break the tie at 3:37 into the second period. Day had the second assist. Todd increased the lead to two goals when he converted a Ryan Marek pass into a goal at 6:46. Saylor, from Day and Todd, made it 3-1 at 9:25 of the second period.
Todd completed the hat trick 31 seconds into the third period on a short-handed goal on Day’s fourth assist.
Morgantown scored a power play goal at 10:06, but Chad DeGroen preserved the victory for the Rams. DeGroen made 18 saves.
Ringgold peppered Blake Phillips with 54 shots.
Ringgold was 0-for-7 on the power play, while Morgantown converted one chance in six attempts.
Girls soccer
Bentworth 9, Charleroi 0 — Rori Schreiber netted five goals to lead visiting Bentworth to a Section 2-A victory at Charleroi.
Schreiber is now tied with Erin Ritzer for fourth all-time with 54 career goals.
Paige Marshalek scored a hat trick for the Lady Bearcats, who improve to 9-0 in the section and 13-1 overall. Emilie Snyder also scored a goal.
“Rori had a big game playing underneath Paige and Jocelyn. (Charleroi) gave her time and space and she made them pay,” said Bentworth coach Tyler Hamstra. “I was really happy to see Emilie Snyder score. She has been one of our best defenders over the past four years and not always one to get recognition.”
Jasmine Manning secured her 10th shutout of the season with three saves.
The Lady Cougars slip to 3-7 in the section and 3-9 overall.
Waynesburg Central 5, Mount Pleasant 2 — The Waynesburg Central girls won a key Section 3-AA soccer match by defeating visiting Mount Pleasant.
The Lady Vikings are 6-4 and alone in third place in the section, with forfeited victories by Derry not added into the win total. They go to 9-4 overall.
Waynesburg Central is 5-4 in the section (with forfeits not accounted for) and 8-5 overall. The Lady Raiders close with matches against Brownsville, South Allegheny and South Park.
Brownsville is in fourth place at 4-5 after a 6-1 loss to Yough Monday night.
Jillian Kijowski spotted the Lady Raiders a 2-0 lead in the first half.
Mount Pleasant’s Megan Liberoni cut the deficit to 2-1 at 36:23 of the second half, but Rhea Kijowski returned the lead to two goals at 22:51.
Liberoni scored her second goal of the half at 9:55, but Jillian Kijowski quickly responded with a goal only three seconds later.
Waynesburg’s Erin Fitch closed the scoring at 1:37.
McKenzie Booth made seven saves to preserve the win.
Penn-Trafford 3, Connellsville 1 — Connellsville had several good scoring chances thwarted by goalkeeper Megan Giesey as Penn-Trafford held on for a Section 3-AAAA victory over the visiting Lady Falcons.
Connellsville is 7-4 in the section and 11-4, and plays its section finale Monday against Hempfield.
Mary Kate Lape spotted the visitors to a 1-0 lead at 26:13, but Sarah Nguyen tied the game just over a minute later on a penalty kick.
The match remained tied until Malia Kearns scored the go-ahead goal at 13:10 of the second half. Nguyen added an insurance goal at 10:29.
Giesey made several top-notch saves to preserve the victory.
Allison Zavatchan had four saves for the Lady Falcons.
Belle Vernon 8, Greensburg Salem 1 — Jillian Butchki scored five goals and assisted on another as Belle Vernon returned home from Greensburg Salem with a Section 2-AAA victory.
Butchki scored two goals in the first half for the Lady Leopards (10-0, 11-2) and added three goals and an assist in the second half.
Farrah Reader scored a pair of goals in the win. Caitlyn Forte also scored for Belle Vernon.
Greensburg Salem is now 5-5 in the section and 5-7 overall.
Girls volleyball
Waynesburg Central 3, West Greene 0 — The Greene County rivals took a break from volleyball section action with Waynesburg Central securing a win over visiting West Greene.
The Lady Raiders won by the scores, 25-9, 25-11, 28-26.
Paige Taylor had a team-high six kills for the Lady Pioneers (8-8). Jersey Wise had 16 digs, while Olivia Kiger finished with eight.
Jefferson-Morgan 3, Brownsville 2 — Brownsville won the opening two sets, but visiting Jefferson-Morgan stormed back to win the next three for a non-section road victory.
The Lady Falcons opened a 2-0 lead with sets wins of 25-22 and 25-23. The Lady Rockets (9-4) countered with victories of 25-21, 25-17 and 17-11.
Caitlyn Dugan had a solid game for Jefferson-Morgan with 30 digs and six kills. Savannah Kramer (8 kills, 3 blocks), Madison Wright (8 kills, 16 digs), Abby Ankrom (20 digs), Autumn Gustovich (7 kills, 27 digs), and Haley Guty (9 assists, 17 digs) all contributed to the winning effort.
Beth-Center 3, California 2 — Beth-Center won the final set of the non-section volleyball match for a victory against visiting California.
The Lady Bulldogs won the first set, 31-29, but California tied the match in the second, 25-16. Beth-Center took the third set, 25-23, only to have the Lady Trojans tie the match again with a 27-25 win in the fourth set.
Beth-Center secured the victory with a 15-13 win in the fifth set.
Tayla Pascoe paced California with 32 digs and five aces. Marlee Renner (11 kills), Ca’Mari Walden (9 kills, 2 blocks), Jordyn Cruse (5 aces), and Ashley Gush (4 aces) also had solid nights for the Lady Trojans.
Noelle Hunter had a nice all-around performance for Beth-Center with 21 kills, seven blocks and three aces. Alissa Minerd finished with 25 digs and three aces. Anna Sloan had nine kills and Zoey Sussan finished with 36 assists.
Uniontown 3, Charleroi 0 — The Lady Raiders returned home from Charleroi with a non-section victory.
Uniontown (8-6) won by the scores, 25-11, 25-16, 26-24.
Mya Murray finished with five kills and four blocks for Uniontown. Jada McCargo had six digs, and Tyannah Eddings totaled eight assists.
Boys soccer
Albert Gallatin 4, Greensburg Salem 1 — Cristian Steeber scored two second-half goals to lift Albert Gallatin to a Section 3-AAA victory over visiting Greensburg Salem.
The Colonials improve to 4-5 in the section and 7-5 overall with the victory in a match postponed on Sept. 21. The Golden Lions are 3-8 in the section and 4-11 overall.
The match was 2-1 when Steeber scored on a penalty kick with 3:28 remaining. Steeber added a late goal with 14 seconds left when he headed in a pass from Luke Flecker.
Christian Hicks opene scoring with 13 minutes remaining in the first half of an assist by Flecker. Flecker then scored with only five seconds left in the half off a Nick Pegg corner kick.
Nate McCusker had a scoreless first half in the nets for the Colonials. Hicks finished out the game in the nets for Albert Gallatin.
Charleroi 9, California 1 — Four players accounted for all the points as Charleroi cruised to a non-section boys soccer win over visiting California.
Cullen Woytovich scored five goals and assisted on another for the Cougars (15-0). Eben McIntyre netted the hat trick and finished with three assists.
Jake Kepich scored a goal and assisted on a pair, and Joe Caruso had an assist.
Nick Goodwin turned aside two shots in the victory.
