Cal U downs Clarion, 35-20, for Homecoming PSAC victory

California University of Pennsylvania rallied from a three-point deficit at the end of the first quarter for a 35-20 Homecoming victory over Clarion University on Saturday in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play at Adamson Stadium.

Trailing 10-7, the Vulcans took a 14-10 lead at 12:03 of the second quarter when Nelson Brown scored on a two-yard run and Keaton Hier made the second of five PATs. Brown rushed for 80 yards on 18 carries with a long of 11.

California (2-1, 4-2) pushed its advantage to 21-10 with 1:53 remaining in the first half when Derrick Caraway pulled in a three-yard touchdown reception from Noah Mitchell.

The Golden Eagles (1-2, 3-3) cut the Vulcans’ lead to 21-13 on James Metzgar’s 30-yad field goal at 7:32 of the third quarter.

California extended its advantage to 28-13 with 31 seconds left in the third quarter when Caraway caught a four-yard touchdown pass from Mitchell.

Caraway pulled in his third touchdown reception, a 15 yarder, for a 35-13 lead at 6:13 of the fourth quarter. He caught six passes for 47 yards.

Clarion cut the deficit to 35-20 with 4:59 remaining when Jeff Clemens threw his second touchdown pass, a 28 yarder to Kahliq Muhammad.

The Vulcans opened the scoring at 12:18 of the first quarter when Jordan Dandridge caught a 33-yard touchdown pass from Mitchell for a 7-0 lead. Dandridge pulled in 10 receptions for 125 yards. Mitchell was 24 of 34 for 331 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. His quarterback rating was 185.3.

The Golden Eagles tied the game on a touchdown pass at 7:44 of the second quarter and took the lead when Metzgar kicked a 37-yard field goal.

Laurel Highlands graduate Jimmy Pierce made three solo stops and one assist for four tackles in playing defensive back for California.
