Trojans win shootout with Bentworth, 67-34
California and Bentworth combined for 101 points Friday night with the Trojans emerging with a 67-34 Tri-State Conference home victory.
The game was tied at 14 after the first quarter, but the Trojans (4-1, 5-3) pulled away with 20 points in the second quarter.
California led 48-27 after three quarters.
Cochise Ryan had a big game for the Trojans with 16 carries for 201 yards rushing and touchdown runs of 51, 2, 11 and 4 yards. Ryan also had a 20-yard touchdown pass to Lucas Qualk.
Lucas Qualk had a 24-yard rushing touchdown. Damoni Stafford scored on runs of 4, 1 and 19 yards. Colton Lusk had a 17-yard touchdown run.
Shawn Dziak completed 16-of-32 passes for the Bearcats (2-4, 2-6), including five touchdown passes. Owen Petrisek caught four of the scoring passes for 22, 33, 15 and 8 yards and finished with seven receptions for 107 yards.
Seth Adams had a 4-yard touchdown reception.
Monessen 24, Mapletown 8 — Isaiah Beltram threw two touchdown passes and ran for another to lead Monessen to a Tri-County South Conference victory over visiting Mapletown.
Beltram carried the ball 10 times for 145 yards and scored on a 5-yard run. He completed 16-of-22 passes for 225 yards and touchdown completions of 40 yards to Antwon Tucker and 9 yards to Jalen Brice.
Tucker finished with a team-high five receptions for 76 yards for the Greyhounds (3-3, 3-5).
Landon Stevenson scored the lone touchdown for the Maples (0-5, 1-7) on a 1-yard run late in the fourth quarter. He gained 63 yards rushing on 19 carries and caught four passes for 34 yards. Max Vanata completed 6-of-16 passes for 41 yards.
Belle Vernon 40, West Mifflin 7 — West Mifflin tied the Big Eight Conference game in the first quarter and Belle Vernon responded with 33 unanswered points for a home victory.
Devin Whitlock scored 14 of the points in the run on a 23-yard touchdown pass from Jared Hartman and a 57-yard interception return.
Hartman scored on runs of 1 and 3 yards, and had a second touchdown pass of 17 yards to Nolan Labuda in the fourth quarter. He completed 8-of-14 passes for 123 yards and set the single season record for touchdown passes.
Larry Callaway led the Leopards (5-1, 6-1) with with 79 yards rushing on 14 carries. Labuda caught three passes for 67 yards.
Elizabeth Forward 24, Mount Pleasant 0 — Elizabeth Forward defeated visiting Mount Pleasant for a key Big East Conference victory.
The Warriors improve to 4-2 in the conference and 5-2 overall. The Vikings slip to 2-4 in the conference and 3-5 overall.
Nico Mrvos contributed on two for Elizabeth Forward’s touchdowns on an 8-yard fumble recovery and 7-yard touchdown pass to Chase Whatton.
Kyle Flournoy scored on an 18-yard run and Andrew Smith kicked a 26-yard field goal late in the first half.
Mrvos carried the ball 13 times for 80 yards and completed five passes for 69 yards. Whatton caught four passes for 48 yards.
North Catholic 56, Uniontown 14 — Uniontown scored first but North Catholic responded in a big way en route to a Big East Conference victory at Bill Power Stadium.
The Red Raiders (0-6, 0-8) recovered a fumble when Cam Walton fell on a loose ball and Jake Shiley pulled in an 11-yard touchdown reception from Torry Robinson at 10:15 of the first quarter and a 7-0 lead after Clay Berkebile made the first of two PATs.
The Trojans’ Anthony Serventi scored the first of four straight touchdowns on an 11-yard run at 6:40 of the opening quarter and tied the game at 7 on the first of six extra points by Will Kunzmann.
Serventi scored on runs of 18 and 15 yards, and pulled in a 22 yarder from Zach Rocco in the second quarter to push North Catholic’s advantage to 28-7 at halftime.
Pierce Khoury scored on a two-yard run at 9:28 of the third quarter to extend the Trojans’ lead to 35-7.
Uniontown responded with a touchdown drive of its own when Robinson ran for 35 yards and scored on a one-yard run over the pile to cut the deficit to 35-14.
North Catholic (6-0, 6-1) got the touchdown back on the next drive when Nick Maher pulled in a 23-yard reception from Rocco for the score and a 42-14 lead at 4:11 of the third. Maher also had a 74-yard catch.
Maher had a 30-yard touchdown reception from Rocco and Liam Staub capped the scoring with a four-yard run at 1:37 of the fourth quarter.
The Red Raiders are at Elizabeth Forward (4-2, 5-2) next week in conference play at 7 p.m.
Carmichaels 27, Union 18 — Bailey Jones rushed for 224 yards and a touchdown and Kevin Kelly added three TDs as visiting Carmichaels built a 27-0 halftime lead then held off a Union comeback in a non-conference game.
The Mikes used a ball-control offense to dominate the first half, limiting the Scotties to just 10 offensive plays and one first down over the first two quarters.
Kelly, who ran for 74 yards and added 47 passing yards, scored on a pair of 1-yard runs in the first quarter with Michael Robison adding the extra points for an early 14-0 advantage.
Jones scored on a 2-yard run in the second quarter and Kelly added a third 1-yard plunge later in the half for coach Ryan Krull’s Mikes (2-5).
Union (3-5) pulled within 27-12 on Tyler Benedict-to-Michael Flowers touchdown passes of 78 and 26 yards in the third quarter. Benedict added a 9-yard TD run in the fourth quarter, but the Scotties could get no closer.
Benedict completed 12 off 22 passes for 294 yards. The Mikes limited Union to just 26 yards on the ground.
Robison had one reception for 39 yards for Carmichaels, which returns to Century Conference play next week when it hosts Frazier.
Franklin Regional 35, Connellsville 7 — Franklin Regional led 28-0 at halftime on the Panthers’ way to a Big East Conference road victory at Connellsville.
Zach Gordon led the way for Franklin Regional (3-1, 4-2) with 230 yards rushing on 26 carries and touchdown runs of 8, 1 and 25 yards. Trevor Brncic completed nine passes for 186 yards and a 10-yard touchdown pass to Jeffrey Downs.
The Falcons (0-5, 1-6) avoided the shutout on Josh Maher’s 40-yard touchdown pass to Ahmad Hooper in the third quarter.
Greensburg Salem 37, Ringgold 0 — The Golden Lions led 30-0 at halftime as visiting Greensburg Salem defeated Ringgold in Big Eight Conference action.
Donte Kinds led Greensburg Salem (4-1, 4-4) with 120 yards rushing on 14 carries.
The Rams slip to 0-5 in the conference and 1-7 overall.
Beaver Falls 34, Waynesburg Central 14 — Waynesburg Central cut the deficit to a touchdown in the second quarter, but Beaver Falls scored two late touchdowns for a victory in Tri-County West Conference play.
Josh Hough scored the first two touchdowns for the Tigers (4-2, 6-2), and scored on a 50-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Caleb Shriver caught a 46-yard touchdown pass from Darnell Johnson for the Raiders’ first touchdown. Trevor Stephenson scored on a 39-yard run in the fourth quarter for Waynesburg (0-6, 2-6).
Johnson ran for 148 yards on 23 carries, while Stephenson hit 100 yards on 18 carries.
Derry 42, Yough 6 — Justin Huss gained 190 yards rushing and ran for three touchdowns to lead Derry to a Big East Conference victory over visiting Yough.
Gamal Marballie hit Reno Ustazewski on a 73-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter for Yough (1-5, 1-7).
Shenango 42, Southmoreland 26 — Southmoreland was unable to rally in the second half, dropping a non-conference game at Shenango.
Shenango (6-2) led 7-0 after the first quarter, 21-7 at halftime and 28-7 after three quarters.
Zach Cernuto completed 15-of-29 passes for 230 yards for the Scotties (5-3), including 30-yard touchdown pass to Riley Comforti in the fourth quarter. Comforti led Southmoreland with 10 receptions for 161 yards.
Anthony Govern completed an 84-yard halfback-option touchdown pass to Brandon Peterson in the second quarter. Colt Harper had a pair of short touchdown runs in the fourth quarter.
Tino Campoli was 13-for-22 for 243 yards, two interceptions and four touchdowns. Jason Kraner caught six passes for 135 yards and three touchdowns.
Washington 56, Beth-Center 14 — Zack Swartz once again led the way for Washington in the Prexies’ Interstate Conference victory over visiting Beth-Center.
Swartz completed 5-of-6 passes for 101 yards and two touchdowns, and ran the ball seven times for 125 yards and three scores.
Tayshawn Levy had 12 carries for 117 yards and a touchdown for the Prexies (5-0, 8-0). Caleb Jackson caught four passes for 93 yards and two touchdowns.
Devin Dingle scored the first touchdown of the game on a 2-yard run and the final score on a 55-yard scamper into the end zone.
The Bulldogs go to 0-6 in the conference and 0-8 overall.
Thomas Jefferson 60, Laurel Highlands 0 — Thomas Jefferson scored 54 points in the first half on its way to a victory over visiting Laurel Highlands in the Big Eight Conference.
Shane Stump threw six touchdown passes for the Jaguars (5-0, 8-0) and completed 9-of-13 passes for 195 yards. Dylan Mallozzi carried the ball six times for 118 yards and one touchdown.
Tyler Christopher had 101 yards passing for the Mustangs (1-4, 1-7). Robbie Sleightor was his favorite target with five receptions for 55 yards. Keandre Cook caught two passes for 48 yards.
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 60, Jefferson-Morgan 0 — Jay Pearson, Bobby Brazell and Eric Alexa each scored a pair of touchdowns as Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (6-2) blanked host Jefferson-Morgan (2-6) in a non-conference game.
