Bujdos’ goal lifts Rams past Carrick, 6-5
Brad Bujdos’ unassisted power play goal late in the third period Monday night lifted Ringgold to a 6-5 victory over visiting Carrick in PIHL Varsity South B Division action.
Bujdos scored his second goal of the game with just 3:02 remaining in the game.
The Rams then had to fend off a power play in the final three minutes to preserve the victory.
Ringgold’s Zach Kalinowski opened the scoring just 22 seconds into the game, but Carrick led 2-1 after the first period.
The Rams (2-0-0) scored three goals in the second period for a 4-2 lead. Evan Eberlein tied the game with Kalinowski assisting on the goal. Bujdos netted a short-handed goal at 5:15, and Kalinowski scored the third goal of the period at 6:21.
Carrick (1-1-0) tied the game with two goals in the first 5:21 of the third period.
Chad DeGroen made 35 saves to preserve the win.
Boys soccer
Bentworth 4, Charleroi 3 — Bentworth knocked the Charleroi boys soccer team from the ranks of the unbeaten with a non-section home victory.
The Bearcats (9-7-1) scored the game-winner with about 22 minutes left in the match.
Cullen Woytovich tied the match 17:22 into the second half with his second goal.
Joe Caruso scored in the first half for the Cougars (17-1-0).
Bentworth led 3-1 at halftime.
Girls soccer
Bentworth 9, Beth-Center 0 — The Bentworth girls soccer team secured the Section 2-A title outright with a victory at Beth-Center.
The Lady Bearcats (11-0, 15-1) close the regular season Wednesday against Monessen. The Lady Bulldogs also secured a playoff berth, finishing fourth with a section record of 6-6 and an overall mark of 8-9.
Jasmine Manning tied the single-season record for shutouts set by Jeanna Brewer in 2014 with her 11th of the season.
Jocelyn Timlin scored five goals, Paige Marshalek netted a hat trick, and Lindsay Davis scored once for Bentworth.
Bentworth coach Tyler Hamstra had high praise for both squads, saying, “Beth-Center played great tonight. They have eight seniors just like us.”
“We are peaking at the right time. We really elevated our game tonight,” added Hamstra.
Belle Vernon 8, Laurel Highlands 1 — Seven different players scored for Belle Vernon as the visiting Lady Leopards returned home from Laurel Highlands with a Section 2-AAA victory.
Belle Vernon (13-3) secured a perfect record to win the section, closing at 12-0.
Belle Vernon led 3-0 at halftime.
Jill Butchki scored a pair of goals for the Lady Leopards, while Marissa Grubbs, Victoria Rodriguez, Chloe Morgan, Morgan Einodshofer, Farrah Reader and Klaire Temoshenka all scored once in the victory.
Grace Henderson and Victoria Rodriguez combined to make three saves Belle Vernon.
Girls volleyball
Southmoreland 3, Belle Vernon 1 — Southmoreland won the first two sets and then secured the non-section win in the fourth set for a victory against visiting Belle Vernon.
The Scotties opened a 2-0 lead with set wins of 25-15 and 25-16. Belle Vernon (4-11) rallied back in the third set, 25-20, but Southmoreland secured the victory by taking the fourth set, 25-17.
Allie Brooks had 25 digs for the Lady Leopards and Maria Iacoboni finished with 11 service points.
Frazier 3, Chartiers-Houston 0 — The Frazier girls volleyball team took a break from section play with a non-section win over visiting Chartiers-Houston.
Logan Hartman led the way for the Lady Commodores (13-3) with 14 kills and 17 service points. Alexis Lovis finished with 19 service points. Kaelyn Shaporka had nine kills and four blocks. Kathryn Barch finished with eight digs, and Mackenzie Kelly had six. Gabrielle Alekson had nine service points.
Trinity 3, Ringgold 1 — Ringgold split the first two sets but Trinity took the last two to defeat the host Lady Rams in a non-section match.
The Lady Hillers won by scores of 25-20, 20-25, 25-15, 25-14.
Freshman Zoey Mundorff led Ringgold (1-15) with 14 assists. Alyssa Pagliei had five kills and 20 digs, while Michelle Stoffel and Kristen Gamble each had three kills. Alexis Sage contributed 27 digs.
