Yough was out-shot by Freeport, 10-3, but the Lady Cougars made the most of those three shots, putting each into the net for a 3-0 victory in the WPIAL Class AA girls soccer semifinals at Mars on Monday evening.

McKenzie Pritts scored two goals for fifth-seeded Yough (17-1-1) and goalkeeper Sarah Krofcheck stopped everything the eighth-seeded Yellow Jackets (16-5) sent her way in recording the shutout.

Yough will play second-seeded North Catholic, which blanked South Park, 4-0, in the other semifinal, in the championship match at Highmark Stadium with the date and time to be determined. It will be the Lady Cougars’ first appearance in the final.

Pritts scored the first goal just 1:46 into the match and Yough took a 1-0 lead into intermission. Natalie Vilchek made it 2-0 with a goal 2:55 into the second half. Pritts capped the scoring with a goal at the 23:20 mark.

Freeport turned up the pressure in the latter stages of the match but couldn’t solve Krofcheck.

The Lady Cougars crushed Highlands in the first round, 10-1, and survived a 1-0 battle with fourth-seeded Burrell in the quarterfinals.

Girls volleyball

South Fayette 3, Elizabeth Forward 0 — Third-seeded South Fayette overwhelmed No. 11 Elizabeth Forward in a WPIAL Class AAA quarterfinal match at Canon-McMillan High School.

The Lady Lions (16-1) won the first seven points in the first set in rolling to a 25-14 win.

The Lady Warriors (12-5) fought back in the second set and took a 13-8 lead but South Fayette out-scored EF 17-5 the rest of the way for a 25-18 win and a 2-0 advantage.

The Lady Lions put the match away with a 25-16 win in the third set.

South Fayette will play second-seeded Thomas Jefferson, a 3-1 winner over Chartiers Valley, in Wednesday’s semifinals with the site and time to be determined.
