2019 — Belle Vernon’s Ryan Marek won the discus with a throw of 140-1 in the Tri-State Invitational at West Mifflin. Teammate Hunter Martin placed second in the 110-meter high hurdles in 14.83 seconds and took the silver in the 300 hurdles with a time of 39.69 to best his own school record in both events. He was third in the triple jump with a leap of 42-11½ and fourth in the long jump at 21-4¼. The Leopards’ Dane Anden was second in the high jump with a best effort of 5-10.
2018 — Kara Mastowski fired a one-hitter as Frazier blanked visiting Burgettstown, 14-0, in five innings, in Section 3-AA softball action. Mastowski walked one and struck out seven. Kathryn Barch doubled twice and singled to lead the 16-hit Frazier attack. Kayla Matway drove in two runs with a triple and a double, and Megan Celaschi tripled, singled and also had two RBI.
2017 — Dan Rooney, Chairman of the Pittsburgh Steelers and guiding hand through its greatest era, passed away at the age of 84.
2017 — Albert Gallatin’s bats were alive as the Lady Colonials cruised to an 18-2 Section 2-AAAAA road victory over Laurel Highlands. Allyn Bezjak belted a grand slam and Annalia Paoli added a three-run blast for Albert Gallatin.
2017 — Dana Vatakis threw a one-hitter to lead the Monessen softball team to a 10-1 Section 2-A victory at California. Vatakis struck out nine and walked just one. She also had a pair of doubles, including a bases-loaded two-bagger.
2016 — Luke Paull threw a no-hitter and allowed only one base runner to lead Laurel Highlands to a 7-0 Section 4-AAA victory against visiting West Mifflin. The only blemish was an error committed in the top of the sixth inning. Paull struck out eight and walked none. Troy Kifer led the offense with a double and single. Hudson Novak and Garrett Kopich also doubled.
2016 — West Greene blasted three home runs, including Madison Lampe’s grand slam in the top of the sixth inning, in a 14-5 non-section road victory at Keystone Oaks. Bailey Bennington hit a solo home run in the fifth inning and a two-run shot in the seventh, while Kaitlyn Rizor blasted a two-run homer in the fourth. Rizor also had a double. Bennington went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI.
2015 — Waynesburg Central graduate Robert Rohanna’s run on the Golf Channel’s “Big Break The Palm Beaches FL” came to a close on the next-to-last show when he lost in a playoff to Justin Martinson. The elimination challenge had Rohanna, Martinson and Richy Werenski playing six holes, Nos. 13-18, on the PGA National Resort & Spa Champion course, including the famous Bear Trap.
2013 — The Albert Gallatin softball team scored in all but the second inning, routing Derry, 13-2, in six innings for a Section 4-AAA road victory. Deanna Delorenzo went the distance, scattering three hits while striking out seven and walking two. She also had a pair of singles and drove in two runs. The Lady Colonials’ Rebecca Bricker had a two-run double, single and four RBI.
2012 — The Lady Falcons’ Miranda Arison improved to 6-3 after striking out 12 leading to lead Brownsville to an 8-6 Section 2-AA victory at Bentworth. Katie Whyel, Miranda Nichola and Payton Ferguson each had a double for Brownsville.
2009 — Laurel Highlands belted out 13 hits and Dylan Clifford went the distance for a 10-1 Section 2-AAA victory at Kittanning. The Mustangs’ Ethan Mildren belted a two-run home run and just missed hitting for the cycle with a double and single, finishing with three RBI. Dave Gaisbauer added a two-run triple and double. Cliffor struck out four and walked three.
2008 — The Pittsburgh Pirates swept their first series in nearly a year after Tom Gorzleanny outdueled Cincinnati rookie Johnny Cueto for a 9-1 victory. Ryan Doumit, Xavier Nady and Jason Bay all homered for the Buccos.
2007 — Noah Pust went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs to lead Jefferson-Morgan to a 15-5 victory over Mapletown in Section 1-A baseball action. The Rockets’ Justin Falcon was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI, and Jarrod Moskola added a pair of singles, two RBI and two stolen bases.
2006 — Home runs by Jeff Baluch and Brandon Noonan in the top of the seventh inning rallied visiting Geibel Catholic to a Section 1-A victory at Mapletown. Baluch led off the seventh with his second solo home run of the game and Noonan, the winning pitcher later followed with a two-run shot, driving in Brendan Costantino, who had doubled. Noonan went the distance for the win, allowing three hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
2005 — The Connellsville softball team pulled into a tie atop the Section 1-AAA standings with a 3-0 home victory over previously-unbeaten Hempfield. The Lady Falcons’ Ashley Whipkey tossed the complete-game shutout after retiring the side four times and stranding four runners. She struck out four and walked none. The Lady Spartans’ Lauren Shaheen, who would later coach Mount Pleasant to a PIAA title, struck out 10, walked one and hit two.
2003 — Mike Weir defeated Len Mattiace on the first playoff hole to become the first Canadian to win The Masters. Weir’s win was the first sudden-death victory in 13 years and the first major title by a left-hander in 40 years.
2002 — Brent Wilson had a solid performance on the mound and Tony Marciante blasted a two-run home run to lead Connellsville past Uniontown, 12-2, for a Section 2-AAA victory on a chilly, rainy afternoon. Marciante’s home run was the first over the left-field fence installed before the 2002 season. The Falcons’ Chris Marsinko, Justin Marsinko, Brandon Bryner and Andy Beucher all tripled.
