Lady Trojans storm back to stun Mapletown, 3-2
California stormed back from two sets down to stun host Mapletown, 3-2, in a closely fought Section 2-A girls volleyball match Thursday night.
The Lady Trojans (6-2, 6-2) take over second place with the win, knocking the Lady Maples (4-3, 4-3) into third.
Scorers were 22-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-23 and 15-13.
Ca’Mari Walden turned in a stellar performance to lead the way for California with 13 kills, five blocks, 14 digs and three aces, and Tayla Pascoe added eight kills, 23 digs and seven aces. The Lady Trojans also got seven kills, eight digs and an ace from Elaina Nicholson, 18 digs and four aces from Jordyn Cruse, 10 digs and three aces from Jenna DeFranco and five blocks and three kills from Alexis Sherman.
Taylor Dusenberry and Krista Wilson paced Mapletown with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. The Lady Maples also got 16 digs and seven kills from Ella Menear, 34 assists from Macee Cree, 14 digs and four aces from Riley Pekar and 13 digs and three aces from Sadie McCann.
Jefferson-Morgan 3, Geibel Catholic 1 – Madison Wright totaled nine kills, 19 service points and five aces and Finley Kramer had 11 digs, 14 service points and five aces as Jefferson-Morgan beat host Geibel Catholic in a Section 2-A girls volleyball match Thursday night.
Scores were 25-18, 25-17, 25-27 and 25-10.
Mia Baker served up 18 points and nine aces for the Lady Rockets (4-4, 4-4), who also got six kills and nine digs from Abby Ankrom, six kills from Savannah Kramer, 14 service points from Caryn Schmolke, eight assists from Nevaeh Dudas, six assists from Ali Ostrich, five kills from Jessica Torres and six digs and eight service points from Maddie Call.
The Lady Gators fall to 0-7 overall and in the section.
Frazier 3, Beth-Center 0 – Frazier ran its section winning streak to five with a 3-0 sweep of host Beth-Center in a 3-AA girls volleyball match Thursday night.
Scores were 25-17, 25-20 and 25-15.
Jensyn Hartman slammed home 25 kills with 10 service points and Kaelyn Shaporka had 14 kills with three blocks for the Lady Commodores (5-2, 6-3). Frazier also got 27 assists from Alexis Lovis, 24 digs from Jordin Brundege, 10 digs from Makenna Stefancik and 10 service points from Maddie Stefancik.
The Lady Bulldogs fall to 2-3 in the section.
Carmichaels 3, Brownsville 0 – Kendall Ellsworth had 15 assists, 14 service points, two aces and eight digs to help lead Carmichaels past host Brownsville in a Section 3-AA match Thursday.
The Lady Mikes (7-1, 8-1) won by scores of 25-13, 25-14 and 25-16.
Emma Holaren contributed 14 assists and two aces and Emma Hyatt and Nicole Ludrosky had 10 kills apiece for Carmichaels, which also got nine service points from Sydney Kuis and 13 digs from Beth Cree.
The Lady Falcons fall to 0-7 in the section.
Yough 3, Uniontown 0 – Yough swept Uniontown in a Section 3-AAA match.
The host Lady Cougars (2-6, 2-6) won by score of 25-16, 25-20 and 25-19.
Tyannah Eddings had eight assists and four digs for the Lady Raiders (2-7, 3-7) who also got 14 digs from Nevaeh McCargo and 11 digs from Riley Baker.
Thomas Jefferson 3, Belle Vernon 0 – Thomas Jefferson swept host Belle Vernon in a Section 3-AAA match.
Scores were 25-9, 25-7 and 25-22.
Gianna Anderson had 10 digs and Kirsten Brooks added three kills for the Lady Leopards (1-7, 1-7). Sarah Bury led BV in assists and Lily Shahan was her team’s top server.
The Lady Jaguars improve to 6-2 in the section.

Girls soccer
Waynesburg Central 1, Laurel Highlands 0 – Ashlyn Basinger scored the only goal in Waynesburg Central’s victory over host Laurel Highlands in a non-section match.
McKenzie Booth made six saves in recording the shutout of the Lady Raiders (4-8).
The Fillies fall to 2-8.
Bentworth 3, Charleroi 2 – Mallory Schreiber scored the golden goal in the second overtime to give Bentworth a 3-2 victory over host Charleroi in a Section 2-A girls soccer clash Thursday night.
Reagan Schreiber scored both of the Lady Bearcats’ goals in regulation.
The Lady Cougars held a 2-1 halftime advantage but Reagan Schrieber’s second goal forced overtime and set the stage for twin sister Mallory to win it.
“Once Reagan got the second I knew we’d win it even if it went to overtime” Bentworth coach Tyler Hamstra said. “We are a very fit team that all looks like distance runners.”
It was the Lady Bearcats’ third game in four days. They improve to 9-3 overall and 7-3 in the section where they remained tied with Seton LaSalle for second place.
The Lady Cougars fall to 3-8 and 3-6.
Boys soccer
Trinity 2, Belle Vernon 1 – Trinity kept its section title hopes alive by handing visiting Belle Vernon its first loss of the season in a 3-AAA battle.
The Hillers (8-2, 8-2) built a 2-0 halftime lead. The Leopards (9-1, 10-1) pulled within one in the second half on Nick Nagy’s goal but couldn’t get the equalizer.
T.J. Watson made 11 saves for Belle Vernon, which hosts Laurel Highlands Saturday.
Laurel Highlands 5, Greensburg Salem 1 – Joey Lemansky had a goal and two assists and Laurel Highlands broke open a close game with three second-half goals to beat host Greensburg Salem in a Section 3-AAA match.
The win clinches at least a share of fourth place and a playoff spot for the ninth time in the past 10 years for coach Jerry Rogers’ Mustangs (5-5, 5-5).
Laurel Highlands took a 2-0 lead on goals by Nico Johns, assisted by Lemansky, and Harry Radcliffe. The Lions’ Wyatt Ramer scored with 6:45 left in the first half to make it 2-1 at intermission.
The Mustangs pulled away in the second half. Ian Hamilton scored on an assist from Lemansky with 29:06 left, Lemansky put in a goal on an assist from Carson Seamon with 19:33 remaining and Johns notched his second goal with 7:09 left on an assist by Radcliffe.
LH out-shot the Lions (1-8, 2-8) 12-3. Zach Layton made two saves in recording the win for the Mustangs.
Seton LaSalle 4, Bentworth 0 – Bentworth hung with first-place Seton LaSalle through a scoreless first half but the Rebels exploded for four second-half goals to defeat the visiting Bearcats in a Section 4-A match.
Dan Myers had two goals and TJ Cerry and Reno Butelli had one each for Seton LaSalle (8-0, 8-1).
Bentworth (5-6, 5-7) falls one-half game in back of fourth-place Beth-Center in the battle for the final playoff spot in the section.
Charleroi 6, Southmoreland 4 – Eben McIntyre scored four goals as Charleroi stayed perfect with a 6-4 win at Southmoreland in a Section 3-AA boys soccer match Thursday night.
The first-place Cougars improve to 12-0 overall and 10-0 in section play, while the Scotties fall to 4-5 and 4-7.
Connellsville 6, Hempfield 3 – Lucas Hammerle poured in four goals to spark Connellsville to a 6-4 win over visiting Hempfield in a Section 3-AAAA boys soccer match Thursday night.
The Falcons improve to 3-6 overall and in section play. The Spartans fall to 0-9 and 0-12.
