Scholarships announced at 115th annual session of YWBA

The 10th annual YWBA Ludwell D. Wiley and Loretta Green-Wiley Scholarship Achievement Awards have been announced. Tiffany Malena Burden, Justice C. Rice and Kiera Michele Tyler received scholarships during the 115th annual session of the Youghiogheny Western Baptist Association (YWBA). The Ludwell D. Wiley and Loretta Green-Wiley Scholarship was started in 2006 by the late Loretta Green-Wiley and Dr. Janice Allen to highlight the influence and guidance of Dr. Ludwell D. Wiley, the late pastor of Mount Rose Baptist Church in Uniontown. Scholarships range from $500 to $1,000 per student. Scholarship recipients must be a graduating senior active in a YWBA church, be recommended by the pastor, active in community, document college acceptance and attendance, write an essay on “Why I Want to Further My Education’’ and have a 3.0 GPA. Burden graduated Albert Gallatin and is a member of the National Honor Society. She will be a pre-med student at Seton Hill University. She credits God, First Baptist Church in Ronco and her parents, Michael and Tiffany Burden, for her success. Rice graduated first in his class from Monessen and is a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society. He was captain of the basketball and soccer teams and editor in chief of the school newspaper. He will attend Grove City College and is planning a career in bio-engineering. He credits Union Baptist Church in Monessen, grandparents Rella and Maurice Rice and parents, Brenda and Craig Rice, for his success. Tyler is a graduate of California. She was on the honor roll, active in dance, sports and cheerleading, and volunteers at the Daisytown Community Center. She was named athlete of the fall by the Herald-Standard. She will attend West Virginia University and plans to become a physician’s assistant. Current scholarship committee members include Dr. James C. Cherry, moderator of the YWBA; the Rev. Clifford Carter, president of the Pennsylvania Baptist State Convention; the Rev. Dewvaul Tracy Jr., the Rev. Mary Baker, Dr. Gwendolyn Nichols, Sandra Tracy, Beatrice Brown and Dr. Janice Allen, chairwoman. Since its first award in 2007, the scholarship fund has been maintained by the Green-Miller family, local churches and friends.
