Authorities look to identify body found in water near Dawson

The Fayette County coroner is seeking help identifying a man whose body was found in the Youghiogheny River near Dawson Sunday night. In a release, Dr. Bob Baker said the man was a middle-aged white male, bald, with an athletic build and a tattoo of a mountain range on his right shoulder. The man was found by two fishermen around 7:35 p.m., said Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Kalee Barnhart. There is no indication of how the man died, Barnhart said. Baker said an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause and manner of death. Baker asked the public to call 724-430-1270 with any information that could help identify the man.

Pa Grange offers scholarship opportunities

The Pennsylvania State Grange and Grange Foundation is offering scholarship opportunities to post-secondary students. The Pennsylvania State Grange Foundation Scholarship is available to all students, regardless of grange membership, entering their junior or senior year of college. Up to four, $500 scholarships will be awarded based on merit and commitment. Deaf Interpreter Scholarship​ will be awarded to those enrolled in a credible program leading to certification as an interpreter for the deaf. The award is $250. Though some local state officeholders will be facing challenges from within their own party in the May 19 primary election, congressional incumbents will be able to enjoy a much quieter season. In the 14th Congressional District, Republican Guy Reschenthaler will face no GOP challenger for the seat he has held since 2019. Now the chief deputy whip for the majority-Republican House, Reschenthaler has easily won re-election in a heavily red district that includes all of Washington, Greene and Fayette counties, and portions of Somerset, Westmoreland and Indiana counties. Nonprofit awards grants to help local child care providers

The Learning Lamp, with funding from an Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) POWER grant, provided mini-grats to new and existing child care providers in the region. The money allowed providers to invest in quality programs, better support children and expand access to child care. Fifty-seven grants of up to $1,000 were given in Fayette, Somerset, Westmoreland, Blair, Bedford and Cambria counties. The funds were used to buy playground equipment, curriculum, outdoor items like fencing and sunshades, and classroom equipment like shelves, center supplies, and cabinets. The Gala of Giving on April 25 will support the Catalyst for Change grant given by the Community Foundation of Fayette County. California Area student killed in electric dirt bike accident

A California Area High School student was killed Friday night in an electric dirt bike accident. Jim Smith, California police chief, said a 16-year-old male was driving the electric dirt bike near Highland Drive behind Adamson Stadium at about 8:30 p.m. Responding officers found a motorcycle into a tree which had fallen across the road. The driver's helmet was located on the roadway. "The responding police units located the operator of the bike over a small embankment," Smith said. "He was unresponsive."
